League Player / Team Question

On league night or nights, I know we'd all like to win. Is it fun and friendly or bltchy and angry, and overly competitive? Is there one player or one team you could really do without? I know most leagues or divisions have at least one person that waves the rule book around and draws it out like a gun throws it in everyone's face at any opportunity, how do you all deal with that?

There's usually that 1 team that people kind of groan over when you mention or just a few people that are more than likely to have the book-marked rules in their back pocket. Typically it's just a good night playing, drinking and seeing people that I've met over the past 9 years. Most wouldn't call somebody out for forgetting to mark their pocket and if I see a new player, or almost anyone, performing the dreaded double-hit shot, I'd just bring it up after the match to the captain and ask them to work on it.

Our Thursday league at Fargo Billiards

I never have heard of anyone making a big issue with rules at Fargo Billiards on Thursday nights, which is the advanced league. We all pretty much know the rules, and if there is a questionable hit, or other question it is taken to the Owner, Mike Page, or GM/Pro Rory Hendrickson.

Do a couple people get loud when drunk, yes, but hardly an issue. With Mike's Fargo Rating system, it is the most competitive and fun league I have ever had the privilege of playing in.

We play BCA rules.

This even extends to our weekly tourneys, and the larger tourneys Fargo Billiards hosts throughout the year.

Notables we have had play in tourneys; Jesse Engle, SVB, Justin Bergman, Richie Richesson, Eic Drubin, Gene Albrecht, plus other regional players. I think if you set the standard, and the players respect the owners, establishment, and the fairness, then problems are non-existent

95% of the time things go very smoothly in our APA division. Perhaps even a higher percentage.

There are a couple individuals that rub some folks the wrong way, but even they aren't miserable every time. I can think of two primary examples, and one or two others that are less of an issue. And none of them create problems very often, just occasionally. And then its usually resolved amongst ourselves, with no calls to the LO required.

Most all of us have a good time, most of the time. It's kind of a family, of sorts. We see most of these players twice a week, year round. I know I consider most all of the players here "friends". And that's over 100 players....

I far prefer playing with people who know the rules. Some people are a-holes to play with, but it's never because they know and apply the rules correctly.

does playing by the established rules bother you?

The only time someone should have to pull out the rule book would be if you respond "that's not against the rules" or some such drivel in response to their objection.

Play by the rules, and they'd have nothing to object to!

good advice ....if people bothered to learn the rules.

2 quick examples.

bcapl format money league. my opponent rattles the pocket with the 8 ball. i come to the table and succesfully pocket my next to last ball. as i get in stance to shoot at my last ball the 8 happens to fall in the pocket.lemme tell you all hell broke loose then. my opponents captain...well every one on that team said my opponent won because the 8 he shot at finally fell in. now mind you some of these guy have been playing in this league for years.

every one on my team had only been playing 2 sessions but we all had played bcapl and knew the rule. the 8 is spotted and i continue shooting. they kept insisting my opponent won.

i went to the lo who was on the other side of thee room playing poker and explained the situation. he stated the 8 is spotted and i continue . i went back and told them what the lo said. guess they did not believe me as the captain went to the lo. next the room owner running the league got involved and said the ball was spotted. after 10 more minutes of arguing the room owner pulls out the bcapl rule book. it says the ball is spotted and i continue. as i finished my run i had to listen to that entire team " who has played in this league for years " ***** about a rule they shoulda known.

next apa. a former team mate of mine starts his own team and is the captain. when my teamfaced his i was playing their best player who hooked me. every was watching as i jacked up and made a succesfull jump with my full cue. the captain ...who mind you was sitting there watching and never bothered to say any thing until after i made a succesfull jump....jumped up and said ....hey you cant do that.! i replied if you gonna be a captain you better learn the rule book.

he goes and asks the lo who is across the room about it. the lo said yes it was legal. later after the match that captain said he thought it was not legal simply because he had never seen any one jump in apa before lol.

so just because you know the rules and play by them don't mean your opponent does.

Some people in league are jackwagons just as some people in life are. Most are not. Playing NAPA the other night in an even race in 10-ball; I picked up the cure ball thinking I had ball in hand (I always confirm first; this time I did not). Mo opponent said it was not ball in hand. I immediately handed him the CB for his BIH since I fouled. He told me to spot it to the best of my ability and keep shooting. I insisted he take BIH, but he refused. (And he would have had any easy out).

This is the way it should be. I would have done the same. I want to win because I deserved to win by my play ability.

In our league the majority of teams and players are all cool and get along. We have been playing against the same teams and players (Some players switch teams over the years) for a while now so everyone kind of knows each other and wants to enjoy playing pool together. There are a few teams and/or players like you described though as it is impossible to get along with everyone and ass holes are around everywhere. The way my team deals with it is we just let him/her or that team have their way, say whatever and move on and continue to have fun among ourselves. We don't let other people dictate how our night of fun is going to be. If it costs us a game who cares. It's just pool and we'll be back at it again next league night.

Our team has been High Point finisher 3X in a roll, Division Champs 2X, lost in the final match by 1 game in LTC's to go to Vegas, to being near last place the last two sessions in a roll and we still continue to come out, hang out. and have fun.

i have done the same. i call those moments ...brain farts.:D

for the most part all my leagues are pretty much drama free. yea sure there is the occasional ass hat but they are far and away in the minority.

i have let teams play over the 23 rule and teams have also let my team play over. some opponents have helped coach my players during a match and we have coached their players. my sun night div is like one big family...well there was one time i lost a rack by not marking the pocket for the 8 ball.:frown:

my tue night div seems to have more ass hats in it.

one no=ight my captain calls me and says some thing came up and her and her room mate cant make it and since i am the co captain run the team. she said she talked to every one that day and i would have 5 players counting my self there.

at match time we only had 4 and i called her,. she said the player told her he would be there.

i played a 3 1st and after wards he asked if he could leave and visit his mother at the nursing home cause she had been quite ill all week. i said sure cause we got a player coming.

well time for the 5th match and number 5 aint showed. we are tied at 5-5 and i am thinking the other captain is gonna call my other 3 for a replay for the 5th match.nope he dont do it . he calls for my 3 that left early to go visit his ailing mother.

i tell him the situation with the guys mother and just call my other 3 who is no better than the one who left early.

he says its not his problem and " per the rules he can call who ever he wants . " he said since the player i called left you forfeit and we win.

that shit would have never happened in my sunday league. heck most teams let you throw who ever you want for a replay.

as has been said before...you will always find at least one dick head in every league...thank fully they are very few and far between in all my leagues.

now playoffs ....tri cups... and cities....every one is out for blood then.:D
