leather wrap cost vs linen

I saw a thread where (I believe) Ryan/Rat,was testing out his new wrap jig. It took him all of fifteen minutes to do a great leather wrap. and the maybe a five dollar piece of leather. its made me wonder why the price hasn't come way down for a leather wrap installation? or has it?
with the proper tools, it seems it is faster and easier than a string wrap.
But don't hit me with the High cost of the jig. I use my $680 dollar Hilti hammer drill all the time at work for quick easy inexpensive jobs. It still makes me plenty of money in the long haul, even though some times i only need it for a couple of minutes.
Shouldn't a leather wrap be the same or less expensive these days?

That has been the case for years, even before the new jigs. I have seen guys ask $125.00 for a leather wrap.

I know it takes me a whole lot longer than 15 minutes to put on a leather wrap and that's using the jig. It costs more than 5.00 for the wraps that I have purchased also.

I will try to explain the best that I can.
1st. The cost of our tools. You do have to figure in the cost of all tools and equipment. How much is up to the owner of the business.
2nd. The cost of a leather wrap is not $5.00
3rd. You are paying to have a specialized job done. By a trained professional!
4th. It takes me longer than 15 minutes. Closer to a hour. But I am probably slow compared to most.
5th. In some cases you are paying for the "name" of the person that is putting it on for you!
6th. Not just anyone can do this. If everyone could then there would be a lot lower prices.
7th. Like in most everything else, pricing is depended upon demand.


If someone is wanting a leather wrap installed. I would suggest to them to take a little time and do some research and find out who is the most reasonable and does a quality job. There is several cue builders and repair guys on this forum that does great work.

In my opinion a leather wrap installed should run $75.00 and up. It all depending on what kind of leather wrap you would like!

The short answer is the law of supply and demand.

Many good points have been made by other posters, but
a specific example that might help clarify is the price
of an ivory inlaid cue vs the same inlays of mother of pearl.

The overwhelming majority of people buying cues prefer ivory
and will pay more for ivory s compared to MOR. Even though the
'raw' MOP material costs many times as much as ivory.

And is a hell of a lot harder to work with. Ivory is so easy it is like stealing. But is has that magic name of "Ivory".

jay i think either you misread or got bad info.

without cutting any leather or taking time to get the lips perfect it takes 20 mins twice to let the glue set up. so there is 40 mins. now to do a perfect job its alot of time feathering with a razor blade ect. then cuttong leather taping off the cue measuring cutting seams ect.

now factor in leather, glue, tape, razor blades, that mutli hundred dollar jig, and the fact my lathe is tied up for an hour 100$ isnt bad.

btw i saw ryans wraps first hand and they are perfect

im personally in the 75$ range for plain. slightly more for the embossed stuff. leather can cost as high as 20$ each. i have done leather for 50$ if the wrap is supplied and i approve the wrap. (thickness wise)
