when installing a leather wrap should it be cut so seam overlaps, and if so how much? or just cut snug up?

It can be done either way -the jigs don't overlap and give good results with a bit of practice.
IMHO - it is much easier to get a 'good' seam with that method.

However, there is a guy, semi-local to me who overlaps to cut, and he
does as good a leather wrap as anyone on the planet.

IIUC - prior to the advent of jigs everyone overlapped their cut. When
I overlap I like at least 1/2 inch of flap.

So I've used jigs before and know how to seal the seams but how does overlap work to seal the seam and have a smooth feel to it?

Hidy Ho,

I believe pdcue is talking about a technique where the leather is overlapped and then you cut throught both layers therefore the edges of both ends of the wrap match each other perfectly. If done properly it makes for a very good seam.
