Looking down the barrel of a gun..Which eye do you close ???

I've often wondered if people who were right eye dominant had an advantage or disadvantage over left eye dominant and vice-versa ..I guess ,depending on your inclination to play right handed or left handed(most rightys are left eye dominant) "sighting" the ball correctly (with your dominant eye) could greatly increase your accuracy ..

Sometimes I invision a red beam that goes from the cue ball to the contact point on the object ball thru the ball and into the center of the pocket ..I align my self properly thru that mental "sight" as it were using my left eye ..

When I'm in dead stroke..Sometimes I don't even watch the ball go in the hole, I just know it's going in after I've "sight" it properly and delivered a commited stroke.

I believe that the most important thing is that a cross dominant eye / hand is the best.

Right handed / left eyed. or visa versa. That puts your dominant eye over the stick better as you lead with it.

I, for instance (can't explain), but I will shoot with a "pistol"(or revolver) with my right hand; but instinctively would put a "rifle"(or a shotgun) on my left shoulder; bringing the "both eyes" dominance to a very interesting point:confused: ; but predominantly use my right hand on the "cue"; cool point there Frazier !!!

I had this conversation with someone that I practice a lot with after seeing a thread here that showed a picture of Strickland with his right eye dead over the cue.

He and I both center the cue under the chin and keep the head straight (no tilt to either side). That's just the way we learned and played for the past few years. I tried using my right eye (dominant) and it worked, but I just wasn't comfortable with that alignment.

I can't agree. Cross dominant means your stick and your dominant eye are on opposite sides of your stick in a normal stance. Cross dominant players go through some contortions to get their dominant eye over the stick - either they tilt their forearm (and sometimes curl their wrist) to bring their grip hand under their torso or they turn their head so they're looking sideways at the shot.

Oops, sorry. I meant "your stick and your dominant eye are on opposite sides of your FACE".

Don't think so. Something like 2/3 of all people are right eye dominant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_dominance) and something like 90 percent are right handed (http://www.indiana.edu/~primate/lspeak.html). I won't bore you with the math, but this means that at least 63 percent of right handers must be right eye dominant.

Sorry, it's just something I happen to have wondered about before.

I agree, most right-handed pros I've observed seem to have their right eye over the cue or else they are centered with their chin over the cue. I am a righty and right eye dominant and play centered.

I stand corrected

I thought I was normal !!!!  ..Well, I guess that explains why I can't make a ball!! ..I've been using the wrong damn eye for 20 years

Next, you'll tell me that you should form a bridge around the shaft of the cue, instead of the butt like I've been doing:eek:
