Richard Black Cues

I love Richard's work and have seen some inlays that are not perfectly centered. However, virtually all of the cues I have seen or owned were quite well done. I also think the playablility and hit were excellent on all 4 of his cues that I have owned. The cues I owned were from the $1000 to $5000 range and were expertly crafted and hit like a dream.

I'M SURE I'M NOT THE ONLY GUY HERE THAT WOULD SAY THAT YOU HAVE HAD SOME GOOD LUCK. I'VE OWNED ALOT OF HIS CUES, AND MANY OF THEM HAD THERE ISSUES. SOME WERE ALSO VERY WELL DONE, BUT THEY ARE HARDER TO FIND.

My problem with Richard Black has little to do with his designs. Yes. He does do very creative work and some of his high-end artistic cues are showstoppers to say the least. But as for his lower end stuff and his catalog cues, his attention to detail is quite bad at times, often leaving many unacceptible and unattractive mistakes on the finished product. And if you ask me, I've yet to come across a Richard Black that I thought played well.

i agree well said. the high end cues have errors in them often, for no reason other than what appears to be a rushed job. I have seen a couple cues that are perfect too. His shaft wood is junk, its 100% the worst shaft wood I have seen on any custom cue ever, for that matter even production cues have better wood, his wood is like balsa wood, you look at it and it gets a ding in it-its very very soft and has 5 growth rings and is never straight,

I own one of the most expensive cues he has ever made and it dosent have any sloppy workmanship like others i have seen, but the shaft wood is worse than ramin wood, and it has ivory inlays in it-a lot of work and the grain of the wood runs at a 45 degree angle-well almost that bad. Its a gallery cue not ment to be played with but why he would use such bad wood in the shaft and put lots of ivory points in it is beyond me. i have never hit a ball with that cue-the only cue i own that i havent played with.

his cues play good not great, the catalog cues are ok, but the shaft wood and lack of attention to detail in some cues dosent make sence, all that work to not finish them right is bad. but i'll say again not all cues have flaws.
