WOW I LOVE THAT GILBERT. A LOT.

If it had an ivory or ivorine joint , I would have liked it even more. And those rings remind me of Ginacue too.

What do you guys think about Andy's pointwork? Most of the cues I've seen the points seemed to be off a little. I think he does great work for the most part but just wish his points and inlay work was a little cleaner.

Just to be clear I want to say that this post is not meant to start anything but a conversation.

P.S. Here's my Gilbert:

This is an interesting discussion. If you're a consumer who wants perfection, then you probably need to look at a Ginacue or McWorter. Andy's work may sometimes have slight flaws and uneveness, but that's because the cue is entirely hand-made. When I say that, I mean everything is manual....no CNC. In my opinion, that's what makes Andy's stuff so desireable...it's not necessarily "perfect". Same with Gus' work...it wasn't always perfect and entirely manual.

BTW, here's an all-ivory one you may not have seen unless you went the the cuemakers exhibit in MD recently.

I assume you mean my shooting cue? My breaking cue is pretty stunning in its simplicity as well.

I designed both cues, except I wanted to try a pink burl like Camphor Burl. But the burl isn't tight enough with the Camphor, so Andy suggested to highlight the cue with Amboyna. Good choice.

The break cue is a sister cue, sharing the same ring work. The wood is a piece of purpleheart that I had under my desk for several years.

Generally, I don't have inlays put into my cues. Inlays are beautiful, but I never know whether they will detract from the look. So, I try to stick with just letting the wood do the talking. I've also gone to plain black Irish Linen or smooth black leather. Same reasoning. The simplistic look can be very striking whereas some more decorative wraps can be distracting.

Here's mine. 6 pts. Rosewood, maple. Nice veneers and ringwork with lizard imprint leather wrap. Love the way this cue plays.

My Gilbert Cues

Here are pictures of four of my Gilbert Cues.

The first two "Ace" cues are my playing cues, the one on the far left is my jump / break cue which Andy bought the ferrule from a Sledgehammer (phenolic) and used that for one of the shafts. He also didn't use Ivory for the joint of the break cue and shifted the "A"'s in the butt so I can tell the difference easily between them.

The third cue from left is his first full splice cue ever and the points are incredible! Andy made a full splice blank that he couldn't use because the spacing was wrong with the points and he also gave me that with my cue. He promised me his first full splice cue so he felt he should also give me his first full splice blank! Andy is a great guy and knows I would never let anyone make it into a cue and it will stay with my collection.

The cue on the right is a Szamboti set of points that Andy made into a cue for me. He didn't sign the points like he normally does because he didn't want to put his signature on Gus's points. He wrote at the bottom:

GUS PTS.
BY GILBERT

I own many different cues and I am very proud of my collection but I can say that Andy's work is better than any other cue maker that isn't using a CNC machine. His points on these cue are incredible and it is hard to believe that they were made by hand without use of a computer.

Don't ask none of the cues are or ever will be for sale! (At least while I
am alive!)

Enjoy the pictures! I can post higher res ones if anyone has a site where I can post them.

Hi Zeeder
I still own that cue, it is one of my favorite designs.

Paul,

Are you the one who purchased it from me in the eBay auction? I really like the design as well. I'll probably design something inspired by that design eventually. Glad you like the cue!

I didn't know that Andy did all his inlay and point work with no CNC. Do most people who do very even v-groove points, like Skip Weston, use CNC to make the grooves more accurately?

The TheMarsMan,

I got to have met you at the DCC along with the Cueaddicts folks...cos when I hooked up with Andy to test some cues, those 2 "ace" cues were the ones he brought! They played mighty nice. I think you were one of the people in the hotel room when I went up to look for Andy.

Also just FYI I never did get Andy to make me one cos I just couldn't wait to get one in my hands -- I eventually just bought a simple players cue from one of his dealers, and I have been in heaven ever since!

BTW how does that full-splice play? Is he making more? I remember him telling me about it, but this is the first time I'm actually seeing a picture of it.

I was definitely at Derby City and I am sure we have met, I never let the Gilberts out of my sight! The full splice plays great, I haven't hit a lot of balls with it, as it being his first full splice it has a lot of collectable value to me. I know Andy was doing a special run of 10 full splice cues which he was numbering, I imagine these are all gone now. I think you can order a full splice from him, but I think they cost more because of the extra time it takes him to make them. I think they hit a little more solid than his half splice, but they all play great.

Take care and order up you dream Gilbert you can't go wrong!
