I have a couple of cues out of a batch that I'm trying to finish up, and those 2 cues have metal rings. In the past I have always under cut and leveled them out before sealing the cue, but this time I had some ivory in the ringwork that I didn't want the black phenolic bleeding into, so I did My first seal cote before undercutting the rings and cleaning them up. I then sanded that cote, before undercutting the rings. One of them has solid sterling silver rings, and the other has brass rings. I undercut them, and was able to get a clean cut, was also able to feather the edge of the epoxy in with 600 grit, since there was a really good cut, and not much lifting of sealer, so there are not any white edges that may show through the sealer & finish, and they have a real nice shine like they should. I just need to seal them off in attempt to lock that shine in, and level them out with the rest of the cue before I do My second epoxy cote. I've used CA for this, and I've used epoxy, but the epoxy takes longer to build up to level sometimes due to the drying time being so much slower, and if for some reason I had to undercut a hair deeper to clean them up, then that only takes longer to level with It. The CA I'm not sure I trust though, seems to want to lift over time, but not sure, since this was on some of My earlier cues when I tried using It.
Anyway, I'm just wondering what others prefer to use when filling & leveling the rings out? Is It the smart bet to stick with the epoxy regardless of time, or can I get away with the CA to level them out before My last epoxy cote?
Not a big thing, but It has struck My interest at the moment, and was wondering if there is possibly a better way that I'm not aware of.
Thanks Guys,
Greg
