Is There A Standard Height Above Table Playing Surface For Lighting. A Friend Asked Me I Said I'll Find Out.

I set mine at 62" from the floor to the bottom of the fixture.....

amount of light not height of the light

maybe it would be more helpful if we could get some data on how much light is needed or required. just thinking.

Isn't that a bit low? I'd be afraid of constantly hitting my head on it while standing up from shots.

Light Height

Here is some information directly from the BCA website.

http://www.bca-pool.com/play/

15. Lights
The bed and rails of the table must receive at least 520 lux (48 footcandles) of light at every point. A screen or reflector configuration is advised so that the center of the table does not receive noticeably more lighting than the rails and the corners of the table. If the light fixture above the table may be moved aside (referee), the minimum height of the
fixture should be no lower than 40 inches [1.016 m] above the bed of the table. If the light fixture above the table is non-movable, the fixture should be no lower than 65 inches [1.65 m] above the bed of the table. The intensity of any directed light on the players at the table should not be blinding. Blinding light starts at 5000 lux (465 footcandles) direct view. The rest of the venue (bleachers, etc.) should receive at least 50 lux (5 footcandles) of light.

I think that the type of the light would also dictate the height of the light. I also agree with BANKONIT that the Diamond Light manufactured by Diamond Tables is probably the best light on the market. At 600 plus dollars it is probably to steep for most pool players.

I always thought the standard, as per my Ewa Lawrence book, was 30~32 inches from the bottom of the lamp to the top of the slate. That's how I have mine at home, and it works out great.

62 inches from the base of the lamp is too high, and will produce shadows, IMO.

40 inches would be good, too, as the BCA says. Sounds about right, as well. But don't be afraid to go any lower if you wish, IMO as well.

Proper lighting is no joke.

I rather play on a table with a good amont of roll of and proper lighting as opposed to poor lighting/good table conditions.

My light (for my 9 ft. GCIV) has 4 lamps, and comes with instructions to mount so the lights are exactly 31 inches from the bed of the table. While it does get dinged not infrequently, only 1 light bulb has been broken in 4 years of heavy play (by Banger McMeatball...breakup's mentor). The lighting is fine at this level, I would not want mine any higher off the table.

just measured mine. the meter reads an average of 430 lux. not bad. IMO, light is important as we age. - n_den :)

I thought ...

that the standard is 78" (6'6") from the floor to the bottom of the light.
