Minnesota Fats on hearing another player complain that the pockets were too big: "Play for more money, that will tighten them up."
Fatty was better than a shrink...he lightened up a room for everyone....
...so it didn't cost the rail birds any consultation fee.
When Cornbread was around Fatty, he couldn't stop smiling.
....and Red was pretty entertaining himself....
...UJ Pucket said Cornbread was the funniest guy who ever walked into a pool hall.
But when Fatty was there, they all knew who the master was.
...'course, Red said Pucket was funnier than himself

..we were all very fortunate to have had characters like Fatty, Cornbread, Puckett, (and many others) to provide us with humor, and a history possibly unmatched in any other game or sport.. Its a shame the average man on the street, was never made aware of this fact!...The popularity of Poker and Golf, may have come in a distant second place, to pool!

You know, Dick....those scenes may never come back....
...a lot of potentials out there, but the most noise you hear in a pool hall now is the sound system. There are some colorful players today, ( Pagulayan is one of them)...but you can't hear a lot of what they say.
The action days produced a lot a raconteurs and men that could actually become poets when making a game. Hardly ever a TV or a radio in the action rooms........
...the game and the players were the entertainment.
It wasn't just Ames', mister...it was coast to coast.
Cowboy Jimmy Moore might have been the finest exponent of the stand-up style....
...and he could play all games, including 3-cushion....and he was pleased to say that no American ever got his money on a 6 X 12.

Didn't I read somewhere that some pool gambling once got busted by the cops...(Was it The Rack in Detroit?) and after a bunch of them got hauled into court, it was Fatty's gift of gab to the Judge that got everyone off the hook and the case dismissed?

You are referring to the Johnson City bust.
I don't believe Fatty was there at the time...probably eating four meals...
I can only paraphrase from a distant memory...but the gist of the plea before court was...
....these poor guys just like to play pool...they ain't gangsters or drug addicts....
....if you took a blood test of them all, you'd find it's 90% hotdog and coffee.
They all walked, and the judge looked at Fatty like it was an honor to have him speak there.

...stands back up and chalks his cue...says.....WC Fields kinda voice...
"Had this shot once in the world's longest session."
...gets back up and chalks again...
"Beat the man for 25 thousand."
...gets back down....then gets back up and chalks again...
"'Course, the table time was 30 thousand.
Gets back down and drives that sucker home!!!!!!!!!!!!
These moments are worth the price of the exhibition....
