linen wrap question

I am having issues with linen wraps "fuzzing" up, meaning getting rough instead of staying smooth. Has anyone tried using bowstring wax to help this problem? What advantages/disadvantages are there? The wrap is still tight, either it's a case causing it, or it's poor quality linen. Ideas?

Irish Linen are numerous strands twisted together. Sanding the wrap after installation cuts the twist and the fiber starts to unravel causing it to "fuzz up". There is no cure except to redo the wrap. Don't sand Irish Linen and don't use wax because it attracts and holds dirt.

Good cuemaking,

I have seen wraps done with beeswax, an iron and pressed that are super slick. As for the dirt thing it makes sense but I havent really had any issues with it on cues I have had with a waxed wrap. Then I dont play for hours a day so YMMV.

I like linen slick and when they get fuzzy like what you are talking about I usually just have them replaced. Most guys do it for $35 or so. I do know that there have been several threads here in the past talking about how to make a wrap feel slicker. A search may give you some options besides a rewrap.

linen wrap

clean and repress, spin in lathe and apply behlen wood turners finish then buff with paper towel, should help.

Good advice. I was going to say clean and repress with starch and if you want it to stay down even better use shaft sealer on it.

If this is a continual problem then maybe your case is causing it.

Another option is a leather wrap.

I had a similar problem like this a few months back. I took it an experienced CM and he was able to clean & repress the wrap into like new condition. If memory serves me correctly, he had it in the lathe and removed the frays/burrs with a razor while the cue was spinning.

Six months later the wrap is still in mint condition.

If your attached to the wrap pay for it to be repaired by a compentent repair guy. If your not attached to it...have it replaced by the same guy. I don't recommend a quick fix on your own...you will more than likely only make the problem worse.

Just my advice, but I'm just a player and not a CM or a repair guy.

Thanks for the ideas, much appreciated. I do have a cue guy, 2 actually-- i was hoping not to have to bug them, but i may have to. It may be time for a stack leather wrap.... the idea was that bowstring wax would condition the wrap, as well as getting the "fuzz" to lay down, but i see where it could get dirty. I may try this on a cheapo cue, my bow string doesn't get dirty, and there's a lot of dirt outside:). I don't doubt that it may get dirty, i just need to satisfy my radical ideas!

Im not a cuemaker.

But IMO, as cheap as wraps are I would just replace the wrap. I have seen guys screw around forever with a wrap with repair guys, "wives tales" fixes, etc.

If it was a $100 or more for rewrap, maybe you should look at fixes, but its practically nothing for a complete rewrap and its new!

Bring it over and I'll fix it for free.

You're my boy blue! Somebody next door might get curious though, since he did the wrap not too long ago..... I'll call you this week anyways, thinking of doing a leather wrap on a cue. GBR

I'd be willing to guess it is the wrap rather than the method. The quality of linen has gone downhill in the past five years.

My thought as well, we both know nothing but quality comes out of that shop when it comes to cues. Trust me, i never questioned the method or builder, i trust you both to do any cue work. Now about sneaking my cue out.....
