Hi guys, ever since I got back into playing I've kinda been wanting to try building a cue. Do any of you know of a good resource for researching what I would need and steps to build a basic standard plain Jane cue? I was thinking just a solid wood butt/forearm with maybe a linen or leather wrap. Just seems like it would be fun to try. Thanks in advance.

Another idea I had if its a better starting point is a conversion. I've got an old sneaky that I wouldn't feel bad about screwing up, lol. Just assuming that my first project wont cone out too pretty. Just wanting to get info on how its done.

Send cueman a p.m. His book is a great place to start. Then you need a wife with a good job to pay all the bills, so you can use your paycheck for the cue shop.:p.
 
Chris'(cueman)book and DVD. Also Joe at www.cuecomponents.com has an excellent set.

Either or both of these should be purchased BEFORE equipment. You may find out that this isn't for you and the money spent on finding out BEFORE is well worth it.

Oh I definitely planned on research before any purchases. Just something I wanted to look into.

Not to bust your balls but I noticed in another thread that you just bought your first cue and you had a budget of $160. If your cashflow is that tight then don't even consider building a cue. It'd be MUCH cheaper to just pick out a multi-thousand dollar custom dream cue & purchase it. :wink:

This might sound funny, but there are still places that make cues that do not use a lathe.
They hand plane and shave the wood down, making the cue a 1 piece cue.
This will work if time is no worry and it is a hobby to make a cue.
It is also the cheapest option.
Soon as you buy machinery, you are up for thousands of dollars .
It all depends on how much you want to pay to make your 1st cue and how many more you may be interested in making.

There are lots of books and DVD's on cuemaking. Tons on the net as well.
Lots of videos of hand worked cues.
 
Some say that getting addicted to crack is cheaper, and less addicting than cue building. If you have a passion for it, go for it. Just know that it's not cheap unless you have access to a lathe, and other machinery.
If not, i'm gonna make a very conservative estimate that your sneaky will cost you at least a grand.
