linseed oil

You can but not by itself. You would need to cut it with solvents until its to your liking. I would suggest having a test piece to try each dilution.

The answer is NO. It dries very slowly and it continues to darken with age. They stopped using it as a finish on furniture in the 1820's and the old timey stories about linseed oil, beeswax, and turpentine mix to feed your old furniture were always wrong no matter how many times they were repeated by people who heard it from someone else who heard it from...................

I know your pool cues are totally different to our snooker cues but a lot of us use Raw Linseed oil. We actually like our shafts to darken with age.

Sticky? Absolutely not. A well oiled shaft stays smooth for years. I oiled my cue a couple of times a year for the first two years and have never had to oil it again since (about 5 years) and its always silky smooth.

I have a collection of articles that was put out by "Fine Woodworking" magazine a number of years ago and one article was on the transfer of moisture between wood and atmosphere. It listed 20 or 25 different types of finish that is applied to surfaces for protection from the elements. The most efficient protection was paraffine at 100%. It went on down the list to the worst protection which was boiled linseed oil, commonly known as BLO. It was -3% meaning, it actually attracted moisture.

Added note yes it would darken the shaft and it will smell for a couple days. If you didnt sand past the "surface" of the shaft where the oil was it would indeed get sticky. That being said I stopped using it after the first three shafts I coated with it years ago.
