Little custom butt-cap work for a friend

i mean if that's what the customer wanted, why not.. there's an entire production cue company that is/was dedicated to this kind of style - viking cues. some real horror designs there, but supply and demand i guess..

i appreciate these kind of threads, nice craftsmanship

Friend wanted some flair on their McDermott, so I added a custom butt-cap and will match the joint collar and shaft collar with the same.

I wasn't a fan of the clashing with the red rings, but it's growing on me.
Just my opinion but a cue is a tool. I think it is better to stick with materials that have proven themselves over the years. Delrin for example.

Delrin? Does anybody use delrin for anything but repairing to original? Horrible looking and can't glue it. Maybe the worst material ever used in cue making.

May have not been the best example but the use of acrylic plastics in parts the require strength is not a good idea. I like Delrin butt caps. Cues I have built with them (thread on) like over 40 years ago are still fine. To be honest though, today I would be using phenolics.

Gotcha, we agree. It is durable, but that is all I appreciate about it for cues. Great for jigs and tooling.

A cue is whatever you want it to be.

Reliable? That’s a preference.

Pretty? Ugly? Preferences.

I play with and schon cue that’s pretty plain Jane but costed me $1800. I recognize where the money should go in a cue, but that’s not what everyone wants.

As for experimental materials and sticking to the tried and true, well, at some point every material was experimental and not tried or true. I’m happy to experiment and see if something works or doesn’t. Half the fun of this for me is doing things others or few do or try.

truth.

keep posting, and remember most people on here are traditionalists

I am okay with anyone's opinions, people on this board always have good feedback and advice, even if I don't personally agree with it.

I'll keep everyone updated with my cue-making shenannigans. I'm finishing the CF shaft right now and will have pics of the complete thing later.
Keep 'em coming boss!!!👍🏻
