I was amazed at the number of people at the bca championship. I also attended my first pro tourney. Real pool seems to be played on 9 foot tables.
The 7 foot tables everyone else plays on is a joke. They should be reserved for bars where there isn't enough space for a full size table. To see so many people taking the game seriously on the small tables is laughable.
When I played baseball my coach absolutely forbid us to play softball, real baseball is pitched overhand. Real pool is Played on full size tables.

If you're suggesting that bar table pool and nine foot table pool are very different, you're right. Rest assured, though, that far too many of the nine-foot table greats took bar table pool far too seriously for anyone to conclude that playing on bar tables was beneath their dignity. Stating the obvious, using small tables in the amateur events allows for a larger field given the size of the venue. That serves everybody's best interests, in my opinion.

You must have very mixed thoughts about Mosconi's world record run of 526 at straight pool on an 8 foot table. Doubt he'd have run that many if he had to put quarters in before every rack!

Small Tables

Driven,Not trying to be argumentative here but just presenting a different point of view.In the area where i live there arent too many 9 ft tables or even 8 fts. And,no i dont play in bars. Many of the rooms in this area just mostly seem to have primarily 3 1/2 x 7 tables, occasionally a couple of 8fts.If i drive the 2 hours to Nasville or Memphis there are 9ft tables but even J.O.B.Billiards in Nashville, probably one of the main action rooms in Tn. has 75% of its tables as 7ft Diamonds.Dont misunderstand,i love playig on the 9 ft tables and wish i could play on them daily but it just isnt available easily.Due to space constraints i have a 7ft Olhausen with the pockets shimmed and Simonis cloth in my basement.Wish it was a 9 ft but my wife was totally unreasonable and insisted that i not knock down a couple of walls(weight bearing).I am not a particularly good player on any size table but do try and practice daily.Just wanted to point out that the comments i often hear about folks who play on bar tables arent always accurate;I am a college graduate, been married 25 yrs.,had my own business for 23 yrs.,have 2 kids, never been to rehab. or prison. Thanks and Best Wishes,M.Sellers

...plus alot of people who frequently play on the 9'ers say that the 7's are somewhat challenging because of the clusters. I like the 9'ers but I am worse on them because I don't have direct access to them on a frequent basis. I wish could get more time in on the9'ers. I can assure you, however, that I am playing "real" pool when I play...regardless of the table size.

Let me respond and apologize publicly for that last comment in my post.Having been to prison or rehab. has nothing to do with this tread. Some of the folks i know personally who have been to rehab. have hearts as big as Texas, they are just battling their own demons. We all battle some demons of our own, just may not be chemical. The prison comment was equally out of line. Not trying to be politically correct, just dont want to be judgemental either.M.Sellers

My team went to Vegas to play in the open team event. I figured we were in big trouble because we all play 99% on 9 ft tables. All our league matches are on 9 footers. And all poolrooms in South Florida have the big tables.
Even though our team had some of the very best players in our area on it, I knew that many of the great teams we would be playing were small table teams.
I figured a top 64 finish would be great. Much to my surprise, we finished 5th place and beat some great teams from Spain, St. Louis, Vancouver, Wisconson, Texas, ect..... Maybe our big table expeirence helped us rather than hurt us.....I don't know.....All I know is that my $800. share covered my casino losses. :D
