How do you like the feel of a lizard wrap? I am about to have a black lizard wrap installed by Mike Webb as part of the donation/auction AZ is having. I am excited and looking forward to it...but curious as to what others thought of this wrap. I love leather, so I am hoping it is along those lines.

Thanks,
Shorty

Recently, Keith got a chance to shoot with one of Michael Webb's custom-made lizard-wrapped cue sticks, and he liked it a lot.

Keith is most definitely an old-school player and has ALWAYS liked a cue stick with Irish linen wrap, old grainy wood for a shaft, and a whole lot of forward balance, very typical of players from Keith's era, IMO.

Sometimes it's difficult to teach an old dog new tricks, but with the advent of all of the latest technologies with pool, to include the popular lizard wrap, he's developed an open mind.

I have a strong feeling, Shorty, that you are going to really enjoy your new lizard wrap. I will be looking forward to reading what you think after you receive it from Michael Webb. Which color did you select?

You know ...

I have always thought leather wraps were sort of classy, and
although I have never had a cue with one, it's one of those
little thoughts in my head that keeps coming back to me.
I have stroked a few cues with a leather wrap, and kind of
liked the way it felt, but don't know how it would be over
several hours of shooting. I never have had a problem with
hands getting clamy, my hands always stay warm and dry.

I would only have it done by someone that had a reputation for
doing it good. You might have to be careful about scarring though.
I had an eel skin cue case by George once, and although it was
real pretty, I had trouble with it getting scarred easily because
the 'leather' was pretty thin on it.

Sounds like I would of loved the old cue sticks myself JAM...love forward balanced and tight grained shafts.

I decided on black since my cue is mostly ebony and ivory. It is an 8 point Schon LTD 642 with a brown stained forearm. Has pretty bushka rings at C D and E as well. Had her almost two years now, and she plays JAM up with my Predator shaft. Never even chalked the original Schon shaft.

Mike does a fantastic job, so I am looking forward to it.

Mike is one of the best when it comes to leather wraps.
Enjoy Shorty and looking forward to pics when it's done.

I have a Mottey with a lizard wrap, and it's terrific. The texture of the wrap makes a difference to the feel, and once you get used to that feel on your grip hand an irish linen wrap feels too smooth like it's gonna slide right out of your hand. I like it a lot.

Poor lizards........<sniff>.

I have a cue that Chris Hightower built from an old Burton Spain full-spliced blank. It has a Lizard wrap on it. I like the feel, but I also like the feel of Irish Linen and Leather, and even a good wrapless cue. The main thing is that I like the look of it (sorry, Marissa).

I don't feel sorry for the lizards at all. You can bet that if they played pool, they'd make cues out of us. Well, those of us that they didn't eat, anyway.

Plus, if you get the BIG lizards, you don't have to kill the whole thing at once...you can just take a leg and make a wrap, then next month take another leg and make another wrap....after the first couple of months the lizard is MUCH easier to catch....

Well..when you put it like that I feel better about the whole thing.

Actually I've played with a Scruggs that had a lizard wrap and it felt pretty nice. I'm still an irish linen person myself.

The odd part of this all is I own two lizards myself...two uromastyx...love them to death as a matter of fact...but has nothing to do with the wrap on my cue in my opinion. I just don't find a problem with it.

I love the look, but can't get used to the feel. I've been doing the "smooth black leather" thing for my last few cues.

I have been thinking about the lizard wrap as well but...
How durable is the lizard wrap compared to other leathers?

Me too, Jam and I am having trouble finding a cue to suit my liking at this time. I decided a year ago to try the Predator shaft thing. When I had Jimmy Reeves make my cue, I asked him to fit Predator shafts only to the cue. I knew that if I had maple shafts made, I would give up on the Predators. I said that I was going to give the Predator shafts a year, and I did. I decided to go back to a maple shaft about a month ago, so I started looking for another cue, and can't find anything that suits my game. Keith is lucky if he is able to find a cue that he can fall back into reasonably quickly.

As well as the linen, the forward balance is very important, and I think that was part of the problem with the Predator. They are about a full ounce lighter than a maple shaft. But I do like the new radial pin that cue makers are using these days. Anyway, hopefully I can find something soon.

Be sure to tell Keith good luck at the Open. We will all be pulling for "Team McCready".

Get a Universal shaft for your favorite cue. They aren't light like a Predator and will provide more forward balance. The ferrule doesn't get blue and they play OUTTA SIGHT! Get the 13 mm instead of the other one. You also might want to get a couple of different joint sizes for other cues if you have them.
One shaft...can fit them all!

My McDaniel has a lizard wrap

In the past i've always used irish linen and wrapless handles. I recieved my McDaniel cue about 8 months ago and it came with a black lizard skin wrap and i love it. Never going back.
