Local pool hall asked me to run league and tourneys. Little help & Questions

Look, this approach is getting nowhere fast...

This thread was initiated asking about leagues, and the OP specifically excluded the APA league.

My initial response provided answers to the OP's questions regarding the USA Pool League and the BCA Pool League.

In response to my post, you demonstrated an APA twist on that matter...
I clarified that those were your twists, not mine, and then specifically addressed your questions.

By then, the OP, fully understood what I had stated and the answers too.

Yet, after answering all of your questions, you persist on this line.

So let's try something a little different. Since my answers to your questions doesn't put the matter to rest, let's try this. You answer your own questions (substituting in APA). So here you go.

In my edited reply I asked three questions.
1) Why does the APA have a (team) handicap limit?
2) Why penalize teams for exceeding that limit (usually preventing all 5 players from being able to play)?
3) If a team can endure an "excessive skill" penalty and still be competitive, what does that say about the APA team?

Ultimately, since this whole line is off topic, if you want me to respond further feel free to start a separate thread, where it'd be more appropriate.

Oh, and I focused on National Tournament because that's where the official rules are defined... Trying to have this discussion based on league play could be even more convoluted because local bylaws can override some official rules. You'd be able to say whatever you want, and could be right. I'd be able to say whatever I wanted, and could be right. And we could both be saying the exact opposite things. Thus, it would bring forth no real conclusions, making this whole banter back and forth even more fruitless.

My only advice for you Keeb, is to not plan too much, too soon.

From your first few posts, you sound like you're gonna have a bunch of different things happening. I think thats great. I hope you have the interest to make all of those things happen. I just hope you try tackle one or two at a time, and get those working, before trying to add lots of other leages/tourneys/programs. It would be a shame to see all your hard work result in failed expectations.

I'm not saying that beacuse I don't think you can handle it, or make it work. I'm only saying that you might not get enough people to commit to all the different things you propose, at least at first.

I can tell you that is gonna be a good room to play out of, if you're involved in it. Your players are lucky to have you.

Good luck!

P.S. I play APA, and don't see most of the issues you see typically complained about here. It may be an option for you. I would investigate how the local LO runs things, and if he/she does a good job, that will take care of many of the issues you hear about. When run right, it can bring a lot of people into your room, and then you can "educate" them on the rest of the pool world. Conversley, if the LO doesn't run a tight ship, then it can make your life difficult. You have the opportunity starting fresh to find out what works in your part of the world, and what doesn't.

The rules differences aren't a big deal, in my opinion. (All regarding 8-ball. I can't speak to APA 9-ball, don't play it right now.) The biggest one is slop vs called shot. I get why "real" pool players don't like it. I never play that way outside of league either, nor do most of the players in our league. It doesn't come into play very often, certainly not with players SL4 and above. Really quite rare in our league.

Take what you make on the break, yeah, I see "real" players point on that, too. Still, most of the matches I play, I can find a shot to take, and I'm no world-beater. It really isn't a big deal, for league play.

Don't get me started on marking the pocket. Why it causes such a furor is beyond me. It's minor. Take the time it takes you to mark the pocket and survey the table, fer crying out loud.

Again, good luck to you, and congrats for the players out of that room for getting someone like you to be involved for them!
