I haven't quite hit the halfway mark of the book "playing off the rail" and already no truer words have been spoken than the following.....

"Whether a gambler has ten thousand dollars or sixty dollars in his ppocket, he will still gamble all of it more enthusiastically than he will spend five dollars for a meal or thirty for a place to sleep."

"Gamblers are as a consequnce vicious comparison shoppers. They will drive ten miles to save two bucks on a meal but think nothing of betting a thousand on a football game."

Both pool players and people close to them can appreciate the words above. Having experienced it to a degree myself, I cracked up laughing when I read it. :p :p :p

P.S. Freddy, you did give back. ;)

Lets get to the teeth of the issue!

Timberly, Sooooo typical of pool players/gamblers.... and you'll enjoy reading the rest of the book.

A story that typifies this, and I won't use names, but I know some of you know who this is. A very proficient and well known money player had just scored 5 figures and went to eat with a group of other players. When his food order gets there, he takes out his false teeth and starts to eat. Someone asks him why and he says the teeth don't fit good, haven't since he got them 20 years ago. So they ask him why he doesn't just get new dentures that fit well. His answer "Man, they're expensive". Just scored 5 figures and wouldn't spend $500 or so on new teeth.

Later,
Bob

No, but this one ...

Hadn't heard that one, but I did hear about the match between
2 well known players (1 from Ok. and 1 from KS, I believe), and
one was getting ready to shoot a close jump shot, and his
false teeth fell out of his mouth onto the table much to the
surprise of all watching the match .... I guess it drew quite a bit
of laughter and joking around. The player, I understand, put them
back in his mouth, but missed the jump shot. The opponent thought
he fouled when the teeth hit a ball..... lol

I learned this at the Mirage poker room one day when the Mirage was the main room in las vegas. Guy was making a phone call on one of the phones in the poker room. He had a full rack of black chips, another rack of 3 stacks black and two stacks of green. 17K in chips. And at least another 10K in cash in his hands at the moment. Not in pocket, just what was in his hands while he was talking on the phone. Dude was dirty. He had a dirty ripped tasmanian devil t-shirt. Dirty old sweatpants. Not the jogging suit pants, just nasty regular sweats. And high top tennis shoes that probably cost 15 new and had holes in them. I wanted to force the guy to go to wal mart with one black chip and buy some clean clothes, shampoo, soap and a razor. It was brutal. I mean in this country you can find clean decent casual clothing for no money hardly. No way would the guy spend a nickel on it though.

Gamblers Money

I agree totally with this truth.....It seems like gambler's stake money is a separate entity in itself....no matter how much winnings he may have, it's only for gambling and nothing else.....It's like it's not for spending on food or clothing or anything else but gambling....Consequently, it seems like it will never be his .... it will eventually be lost back into action....whether next day, next week, or whenever....
