long draw shots

Something has been in the back of my head for a few weeks now. Is the technique/stance/bridge the same for a draw shot within a short distance between CB and OB than a long distance like per example, having the CB near one of the corner pockets and the object ball at the corner pocket on the other side of the table diagonally(straight-in shots)?

I see pros do it all the times (not necessarily the same shots but any given long distance draw shot). I have been told that you need a good cue and a good tip and of course technique. I always thought that technique (for about 90%) was required....

I think the instructers will teach you your stroke should always be the same. As for your bridge I use a closed bridge since I am going to be putting extra power into the shot. My stance changes frequently depending on my comfort. What can I say? Some days I just feel different and standing a certain way is more comfortable one day than it is the next. I think I also move my grip hand back a little for more power with less effort.

But there are some sharp people on here that can tell you the proper way to execute this shot. That is just my way. If follow through means anything this is the shot where it counts most IMO.

On a side note I notice when I am in stroke my cue tip wont even touch the cloth after this shot. It kind of rises as I go through the cue ball. I don't know if that is a good way but I don't try it I just notice it.

For a power draw, a little more follow-through helps, and some lengthen their back swing as well. The crucial this is to hit the cb precisely where you intend to; if you can do that, and hit through the ball, drawing is easy. I frequently see people whip their arms on a power draw and clearly not pay attention to the exact spot they intend to hit, which leads to misses, no draw, miscues, etc.

To me it's a shot thought, or a feeling I need to put in my head for long draw shots, or the buggy whip as I call em (I think of cracking a whip). The more you practice these shots, the more you will develope a thought/feel in your head that clicks in when this shot comes up. Only thing I do mechanically is just about rest the cuetip on the cloth during the warm up strokes.

If the distance between the cue and obj. ball is lets say 4 inches, your bridge should be closer and your bridge hand should not allow the cue shaft to travel more than the distance between the two balls, ie, why take a 8 inch swing to shoot the cue ball only 4 inches? If you want more action on this draw shot choke up.

I've been working on generating more backspin, primarily to draw farther on long shots. A shot-thought has helped me with this shot, I think (and see it in my mind) 'max-spin right through to the target' as I prepare for the shot (I'm down on the shot at this point). As Gerry says, after a while the proper thought jumps into your heal when you see the shot. I'm close now. A loose grip and a long straight followthrough help a lot too.

I also find that the long draw shot increases the chances that one of my demon strokes, the scoop-stroke, will rear it's ugly head. The 'long straight follow through' thought is helping to push this demon back, but too many years of bad habits allow it to see the light now and then
