Well, last night I had the pleasure of finally meeting Linda, our reigning queen.:D
She had come up to my neck of the woods to play in a tournament here in town. My team kinda crapped out on me, so I was not participating in the main tournament, however, there was a 'warm-up' tournament last night.
We had a lovely time chatting and then I pulled her in the first bracket. She took the set, which I pretty much expected, but I was still very, very happy at how well I played against her.....I didn't get my a$$ handed to me!

I was done fairly early, but she told me that she had played until almost 4am when she was in the hot seat, and her and Jake Dosch decided to split, since they had to be back for the 'big' event @ roughly 10am!! Her team was still in the lead this afternoon when I left for home to deal with a pot roast I had in the oven...Lol.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with her, and getiing some table time with her as well, as well as a couple of pointers. I told her that I would post here that her reign is uninterrupted, and that, for now, I would have to be content to be one of her 'ladies in waiting'.;) :D

Sorry guys, but girls kick a$$!!!!:p :D

Oh garsh, guys, now my face is getting red <looking down and digging toe in carpet>

The problem with winning the mini-tournament (we each got $150 btw) was that it ruined the 'player's auction' the next day. No one knew the rest of my team (Cindy Sliva and Eddie Mataya) from Adam but because I ran out every rack when I got the opportunity, they thought I was undefeatable. Ha! We went for $390! We took half of ourselves. Now, we are not the best team there. There had been a doubt that Eddie could get off work to play with us, so we were going to substitute with Raul. Instead, Eddie can make it and Raul puts together a killer team with Don Wirtaman and Jr. (Bad Neck Filipino) and they go for $670 which I buy and they take half of themselves.

Well, of course you guessed it. We drew each other first round. We watched everyone come by and draw their cards. I told Eddie to draw as I have such bad luck with the draw (legendarily bad, as I always draw my husband first) and Eddie drew #8. We watched everyone come by with their cards and no #7. No one from Raul's team even drew a card. What was left over? Yep, #7.

Funny thing is, we beat Raul's team. We all played so well. After that everything seemed like it might turn out all right, because then, maybe we would meet in the Finals. We beat the next team 5-0. (If the team had 3 guys on it, they had to go to 7, we only had to go to 5. If they had the same amount of women as us, they went to 5 as well. If it was 3 women on the team, they went to 4 and we went to 5.)

We went and ate some awesome pizza and stuffed ourselves. Not good. :(

The next team turned out to be 3 locals that couldn't play shape worth anything. One thing I noticed about almost all of the locals is that they could make balls pretty well, but made no effort to break out their problem ball until it was the last ball. And they did not have a clue where the cueball was going. It would bounce around 4 rails, go off 20 balls and then land on the toughest ball on the table, perfectly, lol. It was pretty funny, because there was no plan, they just took the easiest balls on the table and figured where they landed was where they would figure out the next shot. I would play for any amount of money to have them call the next 3 shots and show me how they were going to get there.

This particular team had a guy on there that was totally obnoxious. No matter which way we were shooting, he would stand in front of the pocket. While you were down stroking the ball, he would be talking and moving his head, his stick...pretty much a bar player. Cindy schooled him on ethics, but it didn't matter. He got us on several crucial shots. He was also engaging the audience as well. We tried shaming him, but we should have gotten the TD involved; ethics was just not a huge part of this guy's makeup.

So anyway, they win and the place goes wild. We go over to the loser's side and guess what, we will play Raul's team again in 5th/6th. The board seemed wrong, but with only 16 teams, and using half of a Playpool.com board, I was not going to argue. Losing out in 5th, with payouts starting at 4th place, one of us will go home with no chance of getting in the money OR the auction money. It really sucked!

When we played, we lost the flip as we did before every match (how are we rolling? lol We all took turns calling it, too! :p ) Losing the first break and always having to rotate players with long gaps between Eddie playing was a factor in losing (the first time, Raul's team decided to take Home, that oddly, had to rotate. Later they wised up and took visitors and still got first break, winners break thereafter.) They played well, but we didn't capitalize either. So we are out of the tournament and I am just waiting today to see how Raul's team fares and hopefully, get even on the auction.

Also, my baby, my laptop, broke down this weekend. While I was waiting around, I tried to install my new wireless card from Verizon. Timberly, if you read this, BEWARE, it automatically installs with a compression agent called Venturi client which causes known problems with a whole list of programs that are listed on the internet. So, now I am sitting in a wonderful repair shop with a great couple, Adrian and Pamela and their baby daughter, Heather. We are fast friends. They are going to go get Mexican food for us now.

I was here last night until 11, while he tried restoring several times, my 'puter. He also ghosted the drive so we could re-format the drive, if necessary. He has been at it again since 10 am and we are now barely up to where it was before it crashed. The CD software is bundled, so there is no way to do an install without it and we are very hesitant to reinstall it. 3 tech support calls last night to Verizon were very unproductive, which is an understatement. Basically, they said we should have called them before installation! Those morons did not know anything. I went all the way up to the top in their tech support and they could not offer any solutions. WTH!!

OK, I will be better after my Mexican food gets here, lol.

Lisa, it was certainly a pleasure meeting you. Lisa is quite the fireball and I love her chutzpah. I did give her a few pointers that will help her game. Happy shooting and I hope to come up and visit your 'hood again soon. Today, they have the streets blocked off with some kind of biker street fair and a band. Looks like the street will be rocking!

And Eydie, you know the feeling is mutual. :)

Let me guess...wirey guy, blondish thinning hair, talks ALL the time, and loudly, wears a t-shirt with the arms cut off, thinks he's 'all that'? ;)

Nooooo! Say it isn't so!!! Now I'm gonna have to listen to this yahoo toot his own horn for weeks...there's gonna be no living with him, cocky, obnoxious little sh*t!

Likewise, Linda, you are definitely the Queen!

Please do, as I really enjoyed shooting and visiting with you!

Thanks for the play-by-play! The good action was at the tables in the back, and there was just really no opportunity to sit and watch without getting in the way. I agree that the mini tournament probably killed the calcutta action for you. I didn't tell anyone you were coming, but word travels fast in these little towns...I was trying to keep it on the low-key for you and your team...sorry it didn't work out that way.:( You did create quite the stir!

I'm about 80 miles from Reno and am looking so forward to being there for the upcoming IPT tournment. I'M excited to meet all the players i can, and for sure Linda"s at the top of my list. i've had the pleasure of meeting Mike Z. but have missed Linda in the past so this will be so great to at least say hi to the Queen.

Hey Linda....errrm, Queen! If they don't get it working, bring the laptop with you on Wednesday to Jillian's. I'll take a look at it... with respect to get it operating again. I won't guarantee anything with the cellular card service tho, since I haven't ever dealt with that stuff.

All of this tourney stuff -- it was all in Mt.Vernon?

Solly, it would be a pleasure to play you anytime we ever meet. CCN7, I look forward to meeting you and your lovely wife in Reno!

Umma...the guy got it all fixed...and I made friends that want me to stay with them the next time I am in town, so it was all good. Thanks for your offer, though. :)

Lisa - no, it was the guy that always wears the Madras shirt (2 days in a row! ) Big, burly and his brother shot on the same team. Sky something was their team name.

There is an update to this story...while things were downloading, I would pop on back over to watch how my horses were doing. They were playing that Sky team and it was 5-5. Earlier, they had been called on a game because Raul's team had shot with the wrong player...Raul had written down the wrong player, so they lost that game. Don and Jr. were griping and getting on Raul and he was feeling bad, so no one was playing well. I gave them a pep talk and told them they could do it, and they proceeded to play well and ran out and won the next 2 games. They asked me to score for them in the Finals so things wouldn't get screwed up. :p I pop back over to the computer place, and let them know I will be MIA for awhile.

So now they are going to play another Seattle team in the Finals that consisted of Turbo Johnny, Rocky Dave and Russian Dave. I had so wanted to take them in the auction too, but still thought they were outclassed by Raul's team, sponsored by City Lights.

Boy, was I wrong. Russian Dave and Rocky came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. They got the first break and were running out from everywhere. Turbo Johnny came out of a safety battle and fired an impressive off-angle long 8 all the way up to the pocket at the other end of the table. My boys were demoralized and were still in the match, but could never catch up from that big deficit going to 7. There were 5 BR's with several TR's and some long safety battles that were excellent to watch. 2 great teams, but only one winner and unfortunately for me, no cigar.

Tournament paid about $600 and $400, auction paid $800 and $630, and Russian Dave's team only went for $220 in the auction, but I got my $300 back, which I promptly spent at the Liz Claiborne outlet on the way home, lol. Hey, they were having a sale on petite sizes, ok? :p

Lisa,

I forgot to tell you, when I was watching the finals, a woman that you play against was very interested in having me come out some weekend and give a seminar to a bunch of the local gals. You may not get along with her, from what I gathered, but I think you and the gals that were shooting this weekend would definitely benefit from my seminar. I need a minimum of 6 players to hold it. I also know a couple more players from down here that would be interested in joining you folks up there, so I don't think it will be that tough to get 6.

She thought she could get a couple 9' tables at the Riverside sometime in September. I have given this seminar to many happy players and I have found that it works best to do it in 6-8 hours.

The seminar assumes you know how to pocket some balls. I give you certain things to work on, but we do not dwell on working on them in the class when you can work on them on your own. Even though it is 6-8 hours, we cover a LOT of territory and I give you a workbook for notes and diagrams.

We work on basics, aiming, tangent lines, stroke, english, combos, masse's, caroms, multiple rails, banking, kicking, safeties, strategy, pattern play, etc. The great thing is that I give you several methods to figure out kicking and banking and you pick the easiest one for you to use. And the methods are very easy and for the most part don't even involve a lot of math!

I also give you drills and practice notes for later and you can follow up with phone calls. I make it fun with little contests with prizes. (Everyone wins something!)

We also cover the mental aspect of competition and conditioning and training. It is a very comprehensive workshop and you will hopefully leave with tons of knowledge that you didn't have before you came. It will be up to each of you to work on the skills presented so that you will be armed with the confidence to beat the big guys in your area. ;)
