The dead-ball, end-rail-first system is called "System Sid" in one of Walt Harris's books (IIRC), and is named after Sid Banner who is said to have invented it. Sid has his own book about systems out and it's now in the second edition.
There are many ways to calculate the end rail contact point assuming a mirror reflection. Eddie Robin gives the exact math you have to do in Winning One Pocket. It's not hard to figure out if you have a geometrical bent. Remember that the reflection plane is neither the row of diamonds nor the nose of the cushion.
