I've done both...a 4" mid joint extension on a 60" cue (my -R-) and a 4" butt extension on my 58" Gulyassy. I like them both, but for hit and balance, I have come to prefer the butt extension. newsheriffintown here on AZB builds wonderful in joint extensions in either ebony or maple; Mike Gulyassy made me the butt end extension for the cue he sold me.

I've done a number of butt extensions for tall guys. The cue will fit in normal cases and when you want to play, you just screw it in.

I have also done the mid cue extension and I don't like it as much. I think you are affecting the hit of the cue.

this a custom 2" extension i made to shift the balance back and make my cue 60"

I have used both there are thing I like about each. I feel the Butt extension is an easier transition when adjusting to the longer cue but so far my experience is you can tell your on one Im 6 foot 5 inches so my hand reaches the back of the cue I do not like feeling a change its either fatter not tapered or a step. on the other hand the bid extension I don't feel with my hands but it make the cue front heavy changes the hit slightly and makes my PSR change a lot I have to remember to grip the cue at the top of the wrap and then adjust for each shot something to get used to I guess.

I've made mine 60" by having 31" shafts mated to standard 29" butt. Balance crept forward a hair but that has been decidedly a good thing for me. YMMV

My primary player is exactly that. A 1981 Huebler. I was lucky to find a pair of original Huebler original matching ring 31 inch shafts for it and jumped on them. Love the cue, it was very good before, now it is great. The balance point is slightly forward compared to the original 29 inch shaft but as you say, that is a good thing.

I often wonder why we don't see more 31 inch aftermarket shafts advertised. It seems to be an excellent solution IMHO, especially for those having older butts they want to keep in service.

As you say YMMV, I do think I struck on a very fortunate combination with this cue. But it actually leaves me seriously considering getting such shafts for some of my other my other "better" cues, including my old block letter Joss believe it or not, as well as my Dayton and Espiritu, as well as perhaps one or two others.

Oh....and the 31 inch shafts do fit in my main cases, granted without JPs but that is fine with me. The original Huebler case does fit the shafts with JPs though.

EDIT: Note to cuemakers...you might get some attention if you market some 31 inch shafts. The cue extensions seem to be selling some already, but the longer shaft market seems wide open. Of course...I guess you need the longer wood on hand and if you haven't been stocking it that could be an issue. Think about it.:wink:

jacoby offers 31 inch shafts I contacted a couple venders the other day and it does seem that the longer blanks are a little harder to come by. I personally like the extra length in the back of the cue. but its all based on personal preference.

Like you, I struck on a very fortunate combo with my current player. It was an older butt with shafts that were just gone. I plugged a 30" shaft onto it from another cue & it played great. Took it to Bob Frey for 2 new 31" shafts & it's just amazing how well it plays. The balance shift was just right. Sometimes you get lucky.

Many offer longer. Jacoby only mentions 31 is their limit. They are not marketing 31 inch shafts. Joss will make them as well as numerous others. But are they marketing them? No. But Joss for example does market cue butt extensions, which by the way is also the case with Jacoby.

I don't see any of the cuemakers really marketing longer shafts.

Measuring the balance point from the tip of the cue towards the butt will be more accurate. Just my two cents.
