I sold a nice Titlist Andy Gilbert conversion cue on ebay last week.

I shipped the cue out June 8th via UPS.
The cue was shipped in 4" PVC tube with end caps.
The package could have fallen out of the truck at 45mph and not been broken.
I insured the parcel for $900 and required a sig. on delivery.
Well, June 14 the UPS driver tries to hand my buyer an empty tube with one of the end caps removed.
The end caps were even taped on.
Somone at UPS has very likely has my stolen my cue. (again)
Here is the parcels path as indicated by UPS Tracking.

I'll offer some friendly advice which you can take for what it's worth. Use the Post Office. They have their own law enforcement branch, the Postal Inspection Service. You're asking for trouble using UPS.

However, UPS tracking is 500 times better than USPS. Had this happened with USPS, he wouldn't even know the pass thru cities. JMHO.

I worked at UPS once. I'm surprised that it was delivered since usually they set any packages that the contents have fallen out of to the side. Theft in the loading centers would also be difficult. I would ask them to check the first and last places on your list if you suspect theft. The packages can get handled pretty rough both by the people who load them but also the "miles of conveyer belts" at each loading facility. The cue could be sitting next to a conveyer belt somewhere along the route (if it fell out it is probably fubar). :(

Whatever you do, do not tell UPS it is a one of a kind or irreplaceable!!! They will not insure one-of-a-kinds or irreplaceable cues. Trust me on this...just do yourself a favor and tell them it is a $900- Andy Gilbert pool cue...get a receipt from Andy Gilbert...give it to UPS...get paid...and move on. I use UPS for almost everything. At least when it goes missing or gets broken you know it. UPS insurance is cheaper than anyone elses, and they pay quick when you deliver the necessary documents. With USPS you cannot even track it unless it is Express mail... you cannot make a claim for 30 days, at which time they proceed to look for it for who knows how long...then maybe a year later you get paid!

Man I feel bad for the guy who bought it, because that thing is GORGEOUS, well worth the $800 price tag IMO.

BTW did you write a complaint to UPS or anything? I would be incredibly pissed of something like that happened. Is there any way they can track down who stole the cue?

Just my opinion, you can use whatever you want. The USPS tracks all priority mail, they scan it just like UPS. Ask yourself this: why did a parcel from Detroit to Lubbock pass through LIVONIA, MI, HODGKINS, IL, and OKLAHOMA CITY, OK? The more it gets handled the more opportunity there is for something to go wrong. UPS also has a higher number of transient, minimum wage employees. The vast majority of mail theft in the USPS is external at the point of delivery, after the mail man has put it in the mailbox. The vast majority of UPS theft is internal.

I don't really care what anybody else uses, I use the Post Office.

Wrong. Priority mail is tracked, BUT wait until your package is misplaced. Their tracking system does not scan the packages at each intervel in the delivery process like UPS. USPS ONLY scans the original outgoing time/ location and delivery time/ location. I have had a package misplaced by USPS, using Express Mail, and they could only tell me when the package was scanned into their system. At least with UPS I know the location that my package was lost.

But you are correct to each their own. I use both UPS and USPS, FWIW. I just like UPS's tracking system a bit better. I have only had a problem with misplaced packages....never stolen (knock on wood).

It's a beautiful world.

I repeat. It MAY NOT have been stolen. Each of the transfer centers listed have thousands of miles of machine operated conveyer belt. There are regular blockages on the conveyers. I have seen packages get mangled and ripped open in the conveyer system. I've seen packages take up to a 20 ft. fall. 90 some odd percent make it through just fine. Theft in the centers is difficult because of security. The cue was most likely damaged or found laying on the floor without it's packaging. Give UPS a good description of the cue and ask them to look for it but your probably going to find that it is damaged if they find it.

A year is close, I lost one and after all the hoops I had to jump through it was 9 months. USPS insurance is almost worthless. In my case they deliverd a COD and didn't collect. They expected me to contact the customer and see if I could get the money. Of Course they wouldn't admit to having ever gotten the package, big surprise.

I have never sent a package via UPS, but have been shipped probably 15-20 items over the years. I have had a couple arrive damaged, and a couple more not arrive at all. I will say that I was always reimbursed or if possible a replacement item was sent with the tab picked up by UPS. It's wonderful that they correct their mistakes. If they wanted to play for my softball team, I'd be thrilled with 16 out of 20. For a delivery service, that average sucks.

I always ship vis USPS, and if possible ask to have my items shipped the same way. Because of this, I have sent or received literally hundreds of items over the years. I have had a couple items damaged, but I can't remember anything being lost or otherwise disappearing.

Inferior tracking or not, I like the percentages using USPS a whole lot better.

Don't get me wrong, I use USPS as well for priority, with insurance and delivery confirmation or signature confirmation, and have not had a problem with it since I started using the confirmation services. If someone needs to get a cue on the weekend, then I send it express mail. I just don't like using USPS because the insurance is expensive...and you may not get paid until next year!

Why would they continue to scan an empty parcel? Speaking only for myself, I don't care how many times something gets scanned as long as it gets delivered intact.

If you have a really expensive item I would suggest registered mail. It's more expensive but the chances of it getting damaged or stolen are minimal. The Hope Diamond was once sent via registered mail. Both registered and express mail get more individual attention than priority mail. If you are shipping something of value to someone you don't know you are wise to ask for a return receipt on priority mail, eliminates a lot of headaches. :)

Hey... screw it. I worked there more than ten years ago...what do I care.I was just trying to explain it probably wasn't theft but hell let the guy complain to ALL the different local authorities or maybe the FBI doesn't have anything better to do right now than look for a cue stick.I'm sure USPS would be investigating like crazy (forget mail b-mbs,anthr-x and all that other stuff).
In the mean time this guy is out the money on the cue stick while this investigation goes on.
Eddie file with UPS and get your money.JMHO

HERE IS ONE FOR ALL OF YOU TO TAKE NOTICE, YOU CAN GO TO YOUR POST OFFICE AND SHIP YOUR CUES BUT FOR THE PAST 2 YEARS FEDEX HAS BEEN TRANSPORTING 90% OF ALL EXPRESS MAIL AND PRIORITY MAIL BY THERE PLANES.AIRBORNE WAS THE CONTRACTOR BEFORE THAT AND FEDEX WON THE CONTRACT 2 YEARS AGO. ANOTHER FACT FOR YOU IS THAT FOR THE LAST YEAR UPS HAS CONTRACTED THE POSTAL SERVICE TO DELIVER ITS PARCEL POST IN RURAL AREA'S THRU OUT THE COUNTRY. WHATS THIS MEAN--IT DONT MATTER WHO YOU SHIP WITH,THERE LIKE ALL ONE BIG COMPANY AND THEY ALL SCREW UP. EVERY MORNING,FEDEX,AIRBORNE,AND UPS BACK THERE TRUCKS UP TO MY POST OFFICE'S LOADING DOCK AND EITHER DROP OFF OR PICK UP PACKAGES.

Yes, there is an update.
Several days after delivering the empty tube to TX, UPS did find the badly damaged Gilbert in a facility somewhere several states away.
They decided to wrap tape completely around the stick and ship it down to the original destination.
Well, needless to say, the buyer wasn't exactly happy with the condition, or having to spend two or three hours peeling up the tape from the entire cue.
I haven't seen it yet but I've been told the butt might not be a TOTAL loss.
UPS was to send out some sort of inspection agent to review the cue and it's packaging. On June 20th UPS was to have completed the inspection and then moved on to any claim of damages within three days. Well after waiting about a month with no returned phone calls whatsoever I contacted UPS again Monday July 18th. Again, UPS has promised to inspect the cue and packaging as of no later than close of business on Wed. 20th and contact me by telephone regarding a claim for compensation.
Well, we'll see.
As of today I've not even begun to talk about money with UPS yet.
My customer, though probably pretty pissed, is taking it better than I thought. I think that he holds me blameless in this. I told him from the start that I would do everything possible to help resolve the situation and I have spent more than a few hours doing just that.
Some of the employees at UPS have been so incredibly inept and unprofessional it was amazing. After getting totally fed up with getting nothing done three weeks ago I drove to the UPS building where I initially shipped the cue and talked for a bit with a woman employee who refused to give me her last name! Just Patti. "Patti what?" I asked. Then she suddenly changed into a rude bitch. I just left.
On the other side of the coin, the UPS employee that I dealt with by phone on Mon. 18th seemed quite professional and incredibly happy to help me with my issue. The thing is though, the Monday guy was somewhere in SC when I got him on the phone. Even though he was happy to give me his name, he explained to me that there was no way possible for me to reach him again. He insisted that there wasn't a way to dial in and speak to him by request.
I flat out asked him if I could just dial the building in SC and ask to be transferred to him but apparently that would be too easy.
As this stands today I am still waiting for them to do this "inspection" on the mutilated remains and get back to me.

Eddie in Detroit

Thanks for the update...

Sorry it happened, and I know that it is a pain in the ass, but hopefully things will get rectified sooner than later...
