Looking at getting some new equipment 314-2, Kamui Tip, I have questions

So I currently shoot with a Pechauer SE2 cue with an Everest tip. I love the cue but have been working on my english more and more lately and recently got a new job... so I'm going to get myself a celebratory gift and am planning on picking up a 314-2 shaft.

Now it comes with an Everest tip standard and that is what I'm used to however I was thinking about upgrading the tip to something new. I was thinking the Kamui Black Medium or Soft or the Kamui regular Medium.

From some of the reading I have been doing the Kamui regular Medium is pretty much the same as the Everest as far as hardness.

What would the advantages or disadvantage be if I were to pair the 314-2 with the KB Medium or Soft. I see on Kamui's site they talk about the elasticity difference. Correct me if I'm wrong but the more elasticity the tip has the less effort or softer you can hit the ball and achieve the same amount of english?

Thanks for the help.

Any OB shaft with tiger Onyx tip, I would deff stick with tiger as a brand of choice. Also ive heard extremely great feed back on the onyx tip. That's just my opinion though.

I had issues with the original tip on my 314 so I just replaced it last week with a Kamui black soft. I can't say enough good about it. It plays and feels great. The CB control has improved and it holds chalk well.

I concur. The Kamui Black Soft is working great on my OB Classic Pro.

subjectivity alert ! ! !

this is tough because there are so many opinions - what feels great to me may not feel so good to you.

that said, I, for most of my pool playing life, really enjoyed using moori mediums. However, over the past say 3-4 years they have been very inconsistent and have had mushrooming issues. Too bad because those old ones played real nice for me.

So a few years ago I did my research and the closest in feel looked like it was gonna be a Kamui black soft so I popped one of those on my 314-2 and haven't looked back. This, IMO, is a brilliant playing combo and the Kamui black soft holds it's shape like no other tip I have ever owned.

Two suggestions if you do decide to go with a Kamui black soft:

1. Consider getting approx 1/4 of the tip removed as they are w-a-y tall. While it may alter playing characteristics ever so slightly, IMO, it is the way to go (looks better when down on the shot as it is more consistent with the tip heights we're accustomed to).

2. Absolutely make sure to get the tip from an authorized Kamui dealer. There are counterfeit ones floating around.

As great as the 314-2 / Kamui black soft combo is, I always have a 2nd shaft with me featuring an ever-reliable, cheap-as-dirt, Triangle tip as my non-layered plan B. These old-school ultra dependable tips deserve honorable mention.

And, of course, all of the above is just my opinion.

Congrats to the op on your new job.

Best,

My Xmas gift was a 314-2 shaft with a Kamui med black tip...I'm very happy with both shaft & tip. Well worth the purchase!

Obviously highly subjective, but the Everest being a similar hit to a kamui brown medium theory is not true at all. Everests are soft, mushy and unsatisfying on a Predator.

Predators and Everests are a terrible combination IMO. Predators and KBs are an excellent combination IMO. Just pick your hardness.

Everests are so bad I'll never buy a Tiger product, ever. Honourable mention to Triangles - they're great for the money.

Are you going to the super billiards expo? If yes then you will be able to play with both the ob and the pred shafts. This will help you make a decision.
I have played with the pred for a number of years. I like it. You will find many people who say the same about the ob shaft.
I know a kid who is competing at the expo. He wanted to buy a new shaft. I let him try a pred sneaky peat. He liked it. I told him to practice with it for a week to get used to the difference from his old conventional shaft.

I have a 314-2 with Kamui Black SS on it and love it. also have a Z2 with the original everest tip and don't like it. Switching that one to Kamui as well (black super soft). You cant' go wrong with the Kamui black on the predator. IMO

I too am using a Kamui Black soft on my Lomax shaft. It's working PERFECTLY. (But wait til you read my review of Kamui chalk).

cant speak for the everest but love the onyx not all tiger products are not the same just as you wouldnt want to try a kamui black soft if you are accustomed to a hard tip and judge all of their products based on that. I played with kamui blacks for a while tried tiger onyx on my pre cat 314 and never going back.

Obviously this is very subjective, but for me I like the Predator/Everest combo. My only issue was as the tip would wear down the top layer would just pop off, leaving a square tip and not much life left in the tip after reshaping - not good.

I tried a Kamui Black Soft, it was similar in hardness to the Everest but felt mushy to me. After I had a layer or two taken off, it felt better and closer to what I was expecting. I then changed to a Medium, I liked it but it was just a tad too hard, had to make sure I chalked it more than the Everest. But held it's shape well and was very consistent with english application etc.

Currently playing with a 314-2 / Everest (the Kamui is on my older Z2), if I change tips again think I will try the Onyx, have heard good things about it.

Sure. I know it's irrational, and my ire should probably be vented at Predator instead.

If I were you I would just keep the Everest tip on once you order the 314 shaft. I have tried all different tips but I find the Everest best. The tip also holds up excellent.

314(2) + Everest Tip = Perfect Combination

you are probably right that was a bad analogy i guess im the same i drove a pinto once a friend owned and ill never buy any product ford makes.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think i'm going to try out the kamui black soft with the shaft when I order it in a week or so. While I have had no issues with the Everest on my current cue I figure at the very least I can either get another tip for the predator if I really don't like the kamui or I can just use the standard shaft from time to time.

My Everest tip currently still has about 1/4 to half the to left and is still in great shape.
