Looking at your tip while chalking????

I look before I leap....errr, chalk.
Only my bridge hand holds the chalk and I turn the cue with my shooting hand.
....and I'm always shaping the tip with chalk, grinding off the edge.
You don't need chalk on the center of the tip, I'm always working on the mis-cue zone.

I hate lending my cue to players that don't look when they chalk.....

My vivid imagination includes spending time at my pro friend's houses that they own. Helping them cash $30,000 checks. Brokering deals for them to get $100,000 in sponsorship money.

And of course I have seen pros with no money and loaned them money from time to time.

Guess what, you can find golf pros, tennis pros, and pros in every sport who are dead broke as well no matter how much money they earn.

All I know is that your cranky comment has zero to do with how to chalk. Regardless of what pros earn or own they know how to play top level pool and that is something that is theirs that transcends money. It is what we amateurs look up because we understand that this game is not easy.
 
you are developing a habit, I think it's best to stop looking at it, next game you play try to force yourself not to look at it, cause these type of habits are tend to stick.

When focusing on a layout and slowing my game a but , I will switch the chalk to my right hand with stick vertical and swipe chalk on the tip. I have heard and believe that it is good to let the cue out of your shooting hand and allow it to refocus. Helps keep me in stroke. I only find myself doing it when I'm in dead punch almost unconsciously.
