Looking for a decent room to hang out in NYC

My wife and I are spending the weekend in Brooklyn visiting our son. We would like to watch some good pool playing at a classy room while we are there, maybe get a few hours on a nice table at a reasonable price. I know of Amsterdam Billiards. Are there any other nice rooms that anyone can recommend where we can have a few drinks and watch some serious players and get in some playing as well?

If you are going to Brooklyn, I would agree with Skyline or Hall of Fame Billiards.

Skyline is in the Gravesend/Coney Island area. HOF is in Bay Ridge. I'm not sure what part of Brooklyn you are gonna be in or what your mode of transportation is. Also, near Skyline is Gotham City Billiards.

Amsterdam and Society, while great rooms, is gonna be a bit of a trek. They are in lower Manhattan.

Also, the best "action room" at the moment is Steinway billiards, as ctyhntr mentioned. Tehy have a weekly tourney that all the top players will show up at. Altho in Astoria/Queens, it isn't too much trouble to get to from most parts of Brooklyn.

Thanks for the responses. I've looked at all of their websites, definitely not a seedy atmosphere to any of them. I feel I can bring my son's new GF to places like these.

Skyline looks nice on their website, reasonable tables rates as well (better than we have in my town, which is way upstate). Steinway has good rates as well, and looks pretty nice in the photos.

Society says they have all Diamond tables, and I've never played on one before, so that may happen. I'm curious to see how they differ in play from my own table.

BTW I almost crapped a large brick when I looked at the table rates at Amsterdam. $65/hour on the weekend, with a two hour minimum? Does that price include a lap dance? Holy smokes, who can afford that? More power to them, but we can get a table for two at Skyline for less than one fifth of that price.

Table rates at Amsterdam on weekend nights is $10.25 per person per hour.

I really like the Diamond tables at Society. Worth while to play even for just an hour to see if you like or notice a difference.

Even this sounds damned $pendy to me. Makes me thankful for the hall Cindy & I play in.

You may be off by a decimal point. On weekends if I stay longer than 2-3 hours with someone, I usually get a powerplay. Powerplay run $29-36 from 11am-5pm.

When Amsterdam has their anniversary special $15 powerplay, it was THE cheapest place to play in town.

AFAIK, Society is the only place that has 9 foot diamonds in NYC. Useful information if you're competing in SBE or BCAPL
Nationals.

The other day I ran into an acquaintance Jude. He highly recommends Society.

H-mmm...

Yeah, seemed unrealistically high to me.

I dunno, just getting the price off the Amsterdam website. That is for reserving a table, maybe it is the reservation fee that makes it cost so much?

Again, not to criticize them, they have a right to charge what they can get. I know that Mika and a few other pros hang there, so maybe that is a big draw for them?

BTW anybody got an idea how much these places might get for lessons? I saw no prices online, probably because it might vary from teacher to teacher. Steinway says they offer lessons with Earl. Now that I would pay some serious money for. ;)

They also have discounted rates for regulars/league players. I usually meet other league players on Friday night pay $29 for the table from 9PM to closing. They are losing money on the table time. I figure my part is to order plenty of drinks, food, tip well and be nice to the staff.

The $65/hr rate is for reserving the table for use up to 6. They get a lot of walk in business on the weekend so if you want to reserve a table for a particular timeslot they are going to make you reserve and pay a deposit up front. The standard weekend rate is $10.50/hr. per person. It's on the website too.

Thanks, I figured it was something like that, I just didn't find the regular rates on their site. $10.50/hr. seems a wee bit high, but not out of line considering it is in Manhattan. I may check it out along with the other places mentioned.

$65 and signing a contract. Sounds like party/event pricing.

Many NYC Pros teach out of Amsterdam. Off hand
