Looking for a decent room to hang out in NYC

Yes, I heard Earl was teaching at Steinway. From someone that took a lesson from him, I heard he's very patient, insightful and humble.

BTW I almost crapped a large brick when I looked at the table rates at Amsterdam. $65/hour on the weekend, with a two hour minimum? Does that price include a lap dance? Holy smokes, who can afford that? More power to them, but we can get a table for two at Skyline for less than one fifth of that price.

Where did you see $65/hour, 2 hour min??? That's not even close to right...

It's about $10/hour per person... no minimum. But they have lots of very hot waitresses... so a lap dance may night be out of the question.

H-mmm...

Yeah, seemed unrealistically high to me.

I dunno, just getting the price off the Amsterdam website. That is for reserving a table, maybe it is the reservation fee that makes it cost so much?

Again, not to criticize them, they have a right to charge what they can get. I know that Mika and a few other pros hang there, so maybe that is a big draw for them?

BTW anybody got an idea how much these places might get for lessons? I saw no prices online, probably because it might vary from teacher to teacher. Steinway says they offer lessons with Earl. Now that I would pay some serious money for. ;)

Those Amsterdam prices are for parties... not going to play.

Really?

Maybe I should leave the wife to do some window shopping while I go alone. That way I can look to my hearts content without catching a cue to the head. Plus, the $40 I save on her table fee for four hours can pay for that lap dance.

Thanks for all the answers. And sorry to Amsterdam Billiards for misinterpreting their pricing. Looks like a great place to shoot... or just hang out and watch the real players.

My vote would be for Society. I had my APA team there when I was in NYC.

Also, when you finish there, it's a quick walk over to Paddy's or Barfly and you can socialize around the bar boxes there.

Society also has some barboxes (Diamonds) and a full bar. No need to go elsewhere for drinks and barbox Pool...

Yeah, the APA teams play on the bar boxes. But they're kind of off by themselves and you don't get the socializing that goes on at Paddy's or Barfly (which also have Diamond tables).

Don't get me wrong, I love Society and that will be my first stop off the plane when I return to NYC. Followed by Barfly, Paddy's, and Blackstone's at 55th and 2nd.

Point taken.

It sounds like you might need to update your screen name. You sound more like a New Yorker than an Okie, if you ask me...;)

LOL, well I am originally from Oklahoma! A few years ago, my brother had given me a cowboy hat that's part of the official Texas Highway Patrol uniform (he works on their radios). I had it with me in NYC, and there was a light rain, and I hate carrying both an umbrella and a cue case, so I decided to try the hat out. I went to a place in Hell's Kitchen where the bartender knew me and where I was from, and he yelled "Oh my God, it's the Oklahoma Kid!" I went with it.

I'm currently in rural East Texas indefinitely due to an illness in the family. The nearest pool hall is in Longview, an hour away. Let's just say that it is a far cry from Society. Or Barfly or Paddy's or Blackstone's, for that matter. If I'm here much longer I'm going to get a cheapo bar box to put up in the loft in the barn (it would be a better atmosphere than the place in Longview).

Back on topic: I have always thought 86th Street Billiards was a bit underrated. The tables are decent, table time during the day is cheap (as are beers), and it tends to be quiet. And though it looks far away from Brooklyn on a map, if you take the F train to 2nd Ave and take the express bus up 1st Ave you can get there pretty quickly.
