I disagree, most pool tournaments are held elsewhere because pool rooms aren't set up for good viewing. You can't hold a golf tournament anywhere else; I'd love to see a NASCAR event held in a casino LOL. From what I've seen in the Phillopeans they draw thousands to watch pool tourney's in a mall. Also around here we don't draw any crowds to our pool tournaments held in the pool rooms. I don't have all the answers, but I know it's not about the venues.

Jim

I agree. In Florida most of the tournaments are played in pool rooms and even with 20 of the best players in the world in the same room I have never seen more than 40 or 50 spectators that were not somehow connected to the pool and billiards industry. You would think that having the opportunity to "rub shoulders" with World Champions would draw many more people. You sure don't get that close to World Champions with other sports.

Just my .01 cents worth

malls don't charge a fee for viewing a Filipino pool tourney,,,FWIW

maybe a few malls in the USA would like to sponsor a tournament,,,stores might sell a few more items; of course they'd have more shoplifters, too,,,,,

what about the "Mall of America" up north ?,,,has a hotel in it too from what I've heard,,,,

Pool has no where near the fan base as poker. Why is that merylane? I don't gamble either. I am sucking on a COMMIT lozenge as I type. I do have to have a brewski now and then.
Purdman
Only when the still ain't working. :p

dont forget that was his reasons for the negativity towards pool?

i dont know? and do youreally think poker has a bigger fan base?

all the people i know that play pool also played cards before it was on tv.

i tend to think poker has just been exploited properly.

after all people just cant resist the bad element, wheather wanting too see a car wreck or violence in movies, so i dont accept the negative theory.

i think just about anything could have a fan base if marketed properly.

poker seems to be marketed well, doesn't take up as much room at home as a pool table,,,,,you can hide the cards when sister "Bertha-Better-Than-You" or the preacher pays you a call (unless they are closet gamblers, too)

texas hold 'em is the rage now until something equally entertaining comes along,,,,takes no brains/skill to play,,,most everyone can hold a card, but few can hold a cue right the first time,,,

comparing apples to oranges, again,,,,,,,,LOL

certainly you dont think it was the casual card player next door that got poker on tv?

no, actually the casual poker player next door is not playing pool anymore !

nothing against cards,,,learned to play when I was 4,,,made me learn my numbers, otherwise I would always lose to my grandfather (still can't believe he would cheat his own grandson,,,,LOL)

I guess pool has it's own culture... and those into it, just like cuemaking are passionate about it. I never saw it as a spectator sport... I saw on TV Tiger winning the Masters and saw a whole bunch of people at the background watching... I dunno how many of those do play golf and what do they wactch out for... I'm not into golf and it doesn't thrill me a bit... but some people do...

I watch pool because I wanna learn more... be amazed... see amazing shots... great breaks... long draw shots etc... the audience are players themselves...

You don't have to be a die hard fan. If you like sports it always comes down to the same thing... seeing the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat right in front of you along with the colorful, charismatic, legendary characters that have the ability to pull off the key or impossible shot at just the right time.
The game of golf provides for a tremendous amount of excitement and drama, and yes the audience is comprised of players also, except the audience is 1,000 times or more larger than a pool audience and each one can see themselves vicariously executing the heroic winning stroke or shot to the cheers of millions.

That would be one of the agonies of defeat...yep. Maybe pool needed Howard Cossell...
Pool had Howard Cossell for matches between Fats and Mosconi and it brought the Largest viewing audience of any Wide World of Sports event ever up unitl that time. That may have got pool coming back into populartity in the 70's. It was the characters as well as the sport that made those shows a hit. Fats talked his stuff and Mosconi just very seriously promised to destroy him and proceeded to do so. The people loved it. People love to see big mouths get what is coming to them. But they also love to see big mouths make good on their mouthing, so it was a win, win situation whoever won. It was on major channel TV and advertised weeks before with Mosconi and Fats giving their little quips just like boxing was done at the time. They presented a rivalry and capitalized on it. Maybe they should have Earl insult Johnny or Efren and make it look like they hate each other and are going to put up $100,000 winner takes all to settle their differences. Advertise it instead of just showing it at such and such time. Hype it up like they do poker and martial arts matches. People love rivalries. They love to see scores settled. That is how I think pool would be best promoted. That is why the Mosconi cup is so popular overseas. Show Earl throwing a fit when losing and then show him challenging the winner to one on one match.
Create some kind of excitement. That is my $2 worth.

Pool in Asia in my opinion is dong pretty well and doing it right.

Philippines has pool halls all over the country. More pool halls than all the convenience stores (7/11, am/pm, etc.) combined.

Taiwan do have Televised Tourneys every week and has a big following like the filipinos have.

Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia has big following, but not as big as the two above.

China and Hong Kong is catching up. China has the biggest potential population wise. :)

As far as filipinos are concern, if you watch pool on TV, they are always there to support the sport and the filipinos of course.

Hell it has it's bad reputation before, but it has now changed and it will only get better with everyones collective help in promoting it. There is no better marketing than word of mouth. Don't badmouth a sport you care to love. It all starts within us. Do your part to help and it will only get better.

Peace.
