I know this has been asked before, but I am looking for an old, in good shape, smaller book press that works great and is not rusted all up. Nothing to big, like a 7 x 10 would be fine.
Anyone have one they would sell at a reasonable price? Or may want to trade for?
Thanx,
Jim Lee

If you havent all ready check out ebay. I got mine off of the bay. Look for antique book press.

You can make your own with some plate steel or aluminum $20-80 and a clamp assy that grizzley sells for 70 bucks. It will be more precision and cheaper. I looked for a book press a long time ago but the ones I saw in person did not have flat surfaces sutiable for veneers. I have seen some with nicely milled plates but I don't know what brand they were.
I can get you the part number for the clamp if you don't have a catalog for grizley. Chris.

What is the Grizzly clamp called or part # or better yet both?

Another option.....

I've been using one of these with a couple of pieces of oak bolted to the vise faces. I just mounted it vertically instead of horizontally.

Jim The Woodstock Press is the way I went and its solid as a rock. I Had 1/2" plate steel cut for the base plate and press plate. It is really heavy but works really well.. I wanted to get a book press however even a piece of crap one on fleebay were going for $300 plus . Then shipping was outragous. If you find one they are nice however I feel my setup does a great job..

Hey Jim, I am using the set up that Lee sells at Brianna Products.

http://www.briannaproducts.com/veneers.htm

At bottom of page.

You may want to concider this setup as opposed to a book press. Lee uses mold springs to compress the plates together evenly accroos the veneers. I have use this setup with great results. I would however recommend an apoxy glue as a wood glue causes the veneers to warp after removed from any press.

If you remove the veneers from a press before the glue is fully dry they will curl on you. I press mine for a day or longer if I have time, then when I remove them from the press I stack them and put a weight on top. I use some 1/2 by 6in by 13in long steel plates just because I already had them but I am sure a few heavy books or something would work fine. After a couple days of further drying time they will stay straight. The advantage to the wood glue is the colors stay put. I use Martins veneers and have not had an issue with epoxy or wood glue but some other brands I used in the past occasionally would bleed when I used epoxy. Chris.

Thanx guys, all help and info is greatly appreciated. Lot's of options. I have a veneer press(homemade) just heard the book presses were good. Can never have enough stuff in the shop, right Mr. Byrne? LOL
Thanx......
