Hey all this is my first post on this forum and i was looking for some help on possibly building a pool table. here the situation. I came across an old pool table that someone was throwing away due it the frame being broken which it was but i snag the slate from the table before it was destroyed i now have a 7' solid piece of slate and looking for some guidance on how to construct a pool table while trying to be cost effective also the table is going to need new felt if anyone know of a cheap place that does custom cloths let me know.

Post back if you any incite that may help me.

I alot of people think the slate is worth something, when it is worth very little. It would be much cheaper for you to buy a new table

"Cheap" and "custom" don't often work well in the same sentence. ;)

Beyond that, I would say start with a table style you like. Decide on what style you want and then you'll have something to work towards. You'll need some woodworking skills. Do you still have everything but the frame? (The rails, aprons and legs?

All i have is the slate and looking to make a simple designed table I was poking around online and found that bestbilliard.com has a guide to building a pool table but i wanted to get more incite on where to begin with making the table

You might be getting in over your head. The skills needed to build a table most importantly the rails are pretty high. If your doing it for the experience then go for it but if not than your going to spend alot more money and a whole lotta time then buying something intact. Nowadays you can get on craigslist and fine decent home table used for 500-1000 bucks and you most definitely will spend more than that not even considering the amount of time that will be spent.

I built my own table. If you want to avoid a lot of the pitfalls, you can build the deck for the slate out of 2" x 2", 1/8" thick square steel tubing.

The #1 prerequisite for building your own table is that you have built something of substance in the past (deck, elevated porch, weight bearing furniture).

#2 prerequisite is that you can mill the rails to spec. If you can mill wood with this profile:
http://www.pooltablefeltcloth.com/C...s-Mounting-Guide/K66-mounting-guide-1-58.shtm

and then cut them to meet the pocket specs (see the sticky GC-4 in this forum).

then you might have found a good project.
