Looking to change tip selection

Losing My Mind
Silver Member
I was looking for some advice, I am looking to get the shafts on my cues repaired and during that time I am going to get the tips replaced, I was looking to change it up from the Le Pro's that I have on them currently.

What I was looking for is some advice on possible better replacements as far as on a breaking cue and a playing cue is concerned, I need a harder tip for my breaking cue and as far as my playing cue I was thinking something along the lines of a medium tip that has fairly good english control.

Hopefully someone could help me out because as far as tips are concerned I am not exactly knowledgeable, I only know what I am used to playing and I know there are better out there, just wanting to hear everyones suggestions.

Thanks guys/gals.

You are going to get a recommendation for just about every tip on the market. LOL. So here's mine, Put a Sniper on your playing cue. Have Kevin Varney put a canvas/resin tip on your break cue.

Acually thats what I was hoping for, I like getting a good amount of recommendations before deciding, but I have been hearing a lot about the Sniper tips and a couple others. As far as for my break cue, right now I just have a cheap graphite cue so for that I am hoping to get a tip that I don't have to send my cue out of state to get checked. Although if my cue was the custom one I am wanting to get I know for sure I would send it to Varney as from what I have seen he is one of the best.

Ditto. You will not be regretful with those.

Wow, sounds like the general concensous is for the Sniper tips, I will have to speak to the people at my repair shop here and have them do that up for me, any special things that people have done with them to up the performance or have them last longer?

I am kinda in your area. If your local guy doesn't have any, I can do it for ya for cheap. They are usually like $25-30 installed. I will put one on for $15. Or, I will just sell you a loose one for like $12

Well it's not just the tip I have to get done on one of them, I have to have the shaft fixed as well, the ring work on the joint end is coming loose and whoever repaired it before I got it did a F'ed up job of it so I am going to check with him but I don't know if he will be able to fix it since it will require removing and re-installing the joint itself, I might need a new shaft completely but I am hoping not.

If I need too though I will PM you and we can work something out if your able to do the repair as well, or else I might get it repaired somewhere else and have you do the tips, I will know more on what they can do in a week or two when I get a chance to take it in.

The best guy within 400 miles lives right up here in "the 'Couv" You probably have heard of Greg Sowder. He did the ring work on my ob-1 shaft and it was PERFECT. Call him up @ 360-573-1322

I have just chalked mine and played. Scuffed it once. I am really impressed with them and will be hard pressed to use anything else.

Good luck,
Craig

another vote for the sniper. best cheap tip is the triangle i think. for the break cue any phenolic type tip will be good

I've had a Sniper on my Gilbert for a lil over a month I think, and I love it!

I've scuffed it up once and that was after the intitial 1 week break in I did with it. I had the tip trimmed up too, the same day. And It has yet to mushroom.

And thats using the cue to play and break with sometimes.

I personally hate Moori's now expecially after the last tip went to shit after the first time I scuffed it up.

The only thing that sucks is, I have 3 tiger soft tips, and at the rate I'm scuffing up the Sniper tip, It's going to be atleast 6months before I even consider putting a new tip on.

Any

good layered medium/hard tip will do okay. Scuffing them is bad for tips, and leaves leather string parts on the top of it. I personally shoot with a Hercules medium hard tip, and only replace them about every 2 1/2 years.

The layered tips do much better for english, holding shape, and lasting longer

I initially touch up the shape with sand paper, and occasionally tip pik it.

Sniper is the best overall tip on the market today. It fits most players' games and matches the description of the tip you are looking for and more.

By the way, using a Tip Pik is not recommended for layered tips.

I'll put in another recommendation for the Sniper. I put a Talisman break tip on my break cue and left it completely flat, just the way it came. When I chalk up and break hitting center ball, I leave a contact point that is almost the same size as the tip, 11-12mm. Works great for me.

Yeah I haven't used a Tip Pik as all, I have one of those ultimate tip tools with the shapers, scuffer, etc.. alll in one.

As far as everything else, Sniper sounds like what I am going to do as far as a tip now, I just need to figure out what I am going to do with my current cue weather I am going to fix it and keep it or get rid of it and get something new, will have to see when money situation comes up in a little while.

I will give him a call if I decide to keep my cue, I actually haven't heard of him but I will definatly give him a ring.

Unless you are on the upper level of play, I would save my money and put a Triangle. I have numerous cues and I've tried a lot of tips, including Sniper, Moori, Tailsman (spelling off), and a few others I cut off after playing a couple hours. I have a Moori on my Shurtz and Sniper on a Viking, McDermott and Jacoby. Although I play with the Shurtz/Moori combination because I believe the Shurtz is the nicest stick I have, I will be putting on a Triangle in the near future. I just don't feel/see that big of a difference (at my level) in the way the tips play.

The Sniper and Moori may last longer and hold shape better (not sure about that yet), but I haven't notice any performance difference. I've tried to justify buying all Sniper and/or Mooris to improve my game, but the better tips do not increase my accuracy or english. Also, .80 vs $12 is a big factor to me as well. HOWEVER, if you've never tried them, don't let my opinion sway you one way or the other. It's not going to hurt to try. The guy who said he could put one on for $15 is the best deal I've heard. That's what most people charge for cheaper tips.
