loss of game or not

Two 8 ball leagues I play in allow a pocket scratch on the 8 if it's snookered and missed altogether. Of course the incoming player gets ball in hand.
This morning in a friendly practise game my opponent insisted I lost the game because I didn't hit my eight and pocket scratched. My gentle argument just said OK and I racked for him. I believe he was totally wrong and 3 different sets of rulebooks I looked at agreed with me. I don't and won't bring it up again with him....but where you other amateurs play whaddya think? Oh....and I'm not talking about ridiculous bar room rules. Mitch

I have never heard of having to mis the 8 ball completely in order for game to go on.
Some leagues have a rule,,if you do not make the 8 and scratch,,it is BIH to opponent. Weather you hit or mis the 8,wt cue ball, does not matter. As long as the 8 does not go in.
It all comes down to playing by whatever rule decided before the game. There are plenty of different ways to play.
And these different variations seem to change from one area to the next. One place it is common, and another,,, it is abnormal!!

Huh? Did you scratch? Or just fail to hit the 8? There are different rules in different leagues; in APA 8 ball a scratch while the 8 is the "on" ball is loss of game but non-scratch foul is not. Some other rule sets don't make this distinction.

If you and your opponent don't discuss rules beforehand you'll be hearing about all kinds of weird rules in the middle of a game. 8 ball is like that.

I think you should find a good set of written rules and leave it by the table when you play the guy. Refer to it occasionally on obscure points, like when the rack starts (when the cue ball is struck, not when the cue ball contacts the rack). Maybe he'll look through it.
