Sad news here in Springtown. Shooters has gone out of business.
Shooters was a small room of eight full-size tables, four, or so, bar boxes, and a Snooker table. As with many small businesses the reason was probably profit, or the lack thereof, that caused them to close their doors.
That leaves only Billiards, which as many of you know is referred to as a Bar and Grill.
Slowly we turn. Step by step......

I am sorry to hear that another pool hall has closed its doors. This is the sign of times when the business of pool is starting to lose popularity, which in turn reduces sales in the industry like an uncontrollable chain reaction. I honestly don't see how pool halls are able to financially survive these days. Most rely on pool rentals, food and alcohol, but sometimes it isn't enough. :frown:

Those wondering why our Mosconi Cup team loses all the time and why there aren't any great up and coming American players - THIS IS THE REASON. Few players that are world class ever came out of a bar they came out of a pool room.

Pardon my ignorance...

Do you have a table at home?

If I had the room for a pool table I would certainly buy one. If I had a pool table at home, I would never stop using it. Works for me!

I have had one for about a decade. I is 97% awsome.
As a toy, might be best thing i ever bought.

If they have really good food, and offer events (like really good live bands, and other events other then pool), and a really good atmosphere, then they are likely to survive for a very long time. They must be popular (for other reasons, other then pool) in order to survive, I think. Very sad. I think the only thing that is keeping pool alive is the leagues.

I wonder why top pro players are relocating to the US (from Europe for example), if pool is really getting that bad off here in the US?

It is sad to see yet another pool hall fail. There may not be enough profit in the simple pool hall business these days. With the advent of all the other forms of entertainment available business is hard. Seems to me there is not a lot of incentive for children to learn to play pool or Adults to strive to become great at it. All the more mainstream sports have the allure of fame and fortune for people that can strive to become world class players. Pool and Billiards has no money and very little media coverage. There is an awful lot of people out there that have never even seen a pool game let alone a tournament. Then there are others that don't see live (not on tv) pool games till they are in a bar. It is horrible but unless something changes dramatically we may be living the end days of a great game here in the USA.

Indeed. Hawaiian Brian's pool room in Honolulu, HI, did just that.
The food's okay, the video games are nice and varied, but their evolution saw them
add an area where live bands now perform.

For sure, the poolroom is nowhere near how it was twenty years ago.

I wish the sales of tables for homes reflected your opinions.
The prices I find online for tables are insane!
Maybe not enough people give a flip about the game? Could it be??

This room is not where I usually play, but I had heard the rent was high, and now-a-days if you don't sell enough booze you close the doors. Sad, but true.
Prior to the recession of '08 there was a lot more going on. Pros, and pro level players came through. Even the local boys were betting high. Not now. A twenty dollar game will draw spectators.
Such is life. First your money, then you wife.
