Possibly you have heard of Buddy Hall...he lived in Shreveport for several years (10+) and played out of Red Box's pool room. They had an ad in Billiard News for a while in the mid 70's guaranteeing $10,000 in action to all comers. He was living in Shreveport when he was on the cover of the Sports Illustrated and became known as "The Rifleman".
Another player from Louisiana you may have heard of is Scotty Townsend. He was ranked in the top 25 players in the country for several years.
Keith came to Baton Rouge in the early 80's for a tournament and a wager or two...we mostly knew him as "evil" in those days...liked to play barefooted as I recall...did pretty good in the payball game as well (mixed with Handsome Danny Jones, Red Briet, U J Puckett, Louie Roberts, Jerry Brock, Buddy Hall, etc.). But I don't think Evil would have noticed the humidity or the temperature cause he never left the poolhall.
I don't know what area you're in but I can direct you to some action pretty quick...drop me a PM for directions.
