Low Deflection

JS tells us at the beginning of his new DVD that he is playing that day with an OB-1 cue. I have another video of John running balls (he provides comments afterwards) where he says he's playing with a cue made by Bobby Hunter.

That got me wondering whether that Hunter cue also has a low-deflection shaft -- anyone know?

More generally, are the top players using the Predator, OB, and similar shafts? Or just "regular" shafts?

I'm curious about the whole low-deflection shaft thing and would be interested to hear anyone's comments.

Its all about sticking with something and using it consistently. At first JS was using the Hunter Cue for a while, hence why he shot a video with it. Now he's been playing with an OB-1 for a few months, gotten used to it, of course his new DVD will be him using that OB-1.

I can't imagine how a super low deflection cue would give you any discernable benefit for straight pool. Maybe 9 ball, but not straight, IMO. I do recall one player in the forums who didn't like those shafts for short finesse type shots. I've never tried one myself.

Maybe John Schmidt himself will comment and shed some light on the subject.

Well, I sure don't want to put John on the spot - OB was a sponsor of that DVD, and that was made clear at the beginning. I mostly just wondered whether he and the other top players were using the low-deflection shafts as a rule.

hi

actually i made the dvd on my own, hence the lower production quality.it was just me and a video camera.my hunter cue was a lower deflection cue because of the thin shaft.the ob1 is even lower deflection i would think.
