I am looking to rebuild my lathe. I have close to all I need but the motor, with speed control , mounting bracket and pulleys for a taig based regular headstock.

I purchased my last one from Bassel but he is unavailable at this moment due to personal issues.

So I am looking to try to build my own.

Looking for motor

Speed control

Etc
Let me know what you have

I know that penny state ind has the 1/2 hp motor with speed control for 120$ but I was curious if I can get it cheaper building it myself.

You can get the same motor and controller 1/3 hp for under 85.00(Price last year could be more now) if you want to do some investigating And you will need to buy a plug, cord and switches to finish it up

is there any other place to purchase these motors besides him? i cant seem to locate.

Get the motor and controller from Pennstate ind and the motor mounting bracket from Mid America pool and billiards.............. I have 2 of them . they just bolt on and work with no worries........................

I know about Penn state ind offering as I stated in the original post. I was wondering if I can do it myself and get it cheaper then 120$.

You may get one cheaper but you might need to fabricate your own bracket.......... do you want to make motor mounting brackets or work on cues........... your choice..

True. I really wanted Bassel back in business becouse I got a motor speed control 2 pully and bracket for 130$.

And yes I can make some brackets that is not a big issue if the bracket is stupid expensive.

So I ended up going with the penn state motor controller combo. I heard some bad things about the controller on these things.

For the guys that have these what is the general consensus?

I am not going to core or do really heavy duty with this motor.

The biggie that I have run into is the power on/off switches end up failing after a year or so...depending how much I used them. I now use a momentary footpedal switch from HF to run the lathe and leave the controller switch on. I like the fact that if anything happens, I just take the foot off and it stops. Its called the deadman's switch I think.
Another issue, which if you don't core or drill large holes you may not experience, is the controller doesn't let the motor run to it's potential. The reset breaker is too small, IMO. It kicks at 3 amp draw, I think a 5 amp would be better.

WTF

After checking my head stock that I just got for taig I realized that's spindle is backwards. The Allen screw to set the chuck is facing me instead of away from me. Can I reverse this issue or do I need another headstock.
