Hi, Trying to build saw tapering machine. Need info. for the motors. What size-Hp,rpms for the leadscrew motor. What size-Hp,rpms for spinning the shaft. This is my first post. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If direct driving I would use a 50 rpm gear motor. The horse power is not all that critical in a gear motor. A 1/15" HP Gear motor would be strong enough. I Have a 1/6 HP motor on one and a 1/10" on another one. If you use ball slides you can go way down in HP. You can go variable speed also. If you want fast roughing cuts go with a 100 rpm. Or use various size chain sprockets to get the higher speed out of a slower motor. Make sure your motor is continuous duty.

I've used this motor on 4 different saw shaft machines. It runs both drive and the shaft through gearing. When I run my shaft machines they run for 10 or 12 hours at a time. You can't beat the price.

Hi,

Here is the company I used for my DC Motors and Controllers for my shaft machines. http://www.anaheimautomation.com/. I spent 3 days doing motor research before I got hooked up with them and their engineering staff. Great people to do business with.

The DC Motors that run my lead screw and lathe functions will perform shaft cutting all day long and they don't even get warm. There are trimmer pots on the controllers that gives me complete control of my feeds and speeds.

The ones I use have 1/4" shafts and I use small lovejoy couplings. They are very small and lightweight (2 1/2" in Dia and 4" long) and really easy to mount, 4 bolt flange NEMA set up.

Give these guys a call and they can help you out. If you have a problem getting the right set up speed ranges, give me a call @ 847 641-0276 and I can give you my model numbers.

I bought a half nut lever set up from Littlemachineshop.com. They sell parts for the mini lathes. After I do a pass, I disengage the half nut and slide the table back to the starting position, adjust the height of the next cut, hit the half nut lever and away we go again. You must install a stop switch so you don't crash the unit into the saw blade, it gets very close at the end of the cut.

I use 2 motors on each one of on my machines. Dick's has a nice set up in the picture and it is a lot less expensive (I wish I knew him before I built my machines). He uses gearing to control the speed functions on the lathe and feed rate. It took me a long time to get my speed and feed rate correct so that my shafts and rough cut butts came out with a smooth RMS finish. After my final cut, I am ready for applying a sealer and burnishing after sanding about 30 seconds at 600 grit, then 30 at 1200 grit. If you go with one motor, I am sure Dick or Chris will help you with the gearing set up ratio.

My buddy, Cue Maker Darrin Hill designed and milled all the parts for my machines. I was just a helper in the building of my machines and his new set up. If you got the extra cash and want a turn key set up give him a call. Hillscues.com. There are some pics of Darrin's work on the AZ Thread http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=163875&page=2 (scroll down 7 posts) so you can see the set up and view the motors. The controllers are mounted in the gray box bolted to the table saw.

Good luck!!
