Magic rack on nap cloth?

Hey all,

So, I pulled the trigger and upgraded from a beat up old US Billiards bar box to an 8 foot pro Gold Crown 3 (got a great deal on it). The one problem is that it has nap cloth (not worsted).

The cloth is almost new so I am not going to replace it for a while but I am having one issue with it. My magic rack cannot get a tight rack on this cloth. The magic rack sits on the very top of the nap and then the spots where the balls go 'sink' just a bit when the balls are added. This causes some of the balls to come a bit loose.

I am just wondering if this is something others have found a solution for or if it is just a matter of dealing with it until I buy some quality worsted cloth.

My solution?
Change the cloth...'cause when you do upgrade, you'll have to change your game.
Balls cut differently on napped cloth, the spin doesn't stay on as long, and whitey tends
to masse with english.
I've had a lot of experience with nap cloth, from Mali 821 (about 22oz) right up to WOE
snooker cloth (42oz)....it's like putting on a green that hasn't been mowed enough.

I have to agree with PT on this discussion, especially if you play in tournaments and such with Diamond tables. You have a top of the line table, just gotta install the matching cloth now. I waited about a year to go from a nappy cloth to Simonis on my Gold Crown, probably the best thing I ever did.
 
The Magic Rack is worthless unless the balls are newer, still round and in good shape. I don't see how thicker cloth can affect it. Try a different set of balls or as others have said, the Accu-Rack works with beat up balls. If the cloth is that pitted in the rack area, probably nothing will work.

If it's time to get a new set of balls anyway, I would try that first. Playing with a new set of balls compared to a beat up set is well worth the money. Ultimately, a cloth upgrade will make your pool experience so much better.

Thanks guys, I completely agree. I would love to get some new cloth for it but it will have to wait. Even though it was a great deal it did push my budget after moving and assembly expenses. I have a 5 month old son who has to take priority over any unbudgeted toys for me at this point :)

Hoping to get it replaced in the next couple of years.

The balls are good - they are about 3 years old and they are aramith premiums (blue logo on the cueball). They racked perfectly on the old bar box with the worsted cloth (or maybe nap cloth that is so old there is no nap left lol). You can see the rack sitting lower to the bed of the table where the balls are compressing the nap - not sure if that makes sense.
 
A good quality triangle rack is my suggestion. I doubt any template would behave differently if your cloth is thick enough that the template isn't sitting flat.
Or maybe you could get one of those clothes lint shaver things and go to town.

Those are good balls. I've never tried the MR on nap cloth, so maybe that is it. I would probably try using something to flatten the rack area first, maybe just a warm iron (no steam or water). I use my MR all the time and it is the best thing for a perfect rack.
 
I would definitely upgrade to worsted. I too am on nap cloth on my pool table and the difference between my table and the gold crowns at my pool hall are day and night because of the speed difference. I find myself coming up short when I practice at home, and I always overpower my shot when I play on worsted. It take a lot of adjusting when you practice on completely different equipment. My advice is to bite the bullet and upgrade the cloth, it'll be more enjoyable and more beneficial to your game.

Since we are spending his money, those pockets need to be tightened to meet AZB standards. Which I think are approaching to 1 mm smaller than the actual ball :rolleyes::D

Thanks for the suggestions. I am not going to be ironing the table or shaving down the nap.

Masayoshi - what type of hole reinforcers were you referring to?

Probably not a good idea to use an iron. That nappy cloth probably has a high nylon thread content. And I practically ruined one of the ol ladies irons trying this. And it didn't take long. In seconds the iron had melted nylon sticking to it! And I didn't have the heat turned up too much. FYI....I was trying to lay my beeswax seams down. They raised up a bit.

If you do try it, use a thin towel between the cloth and the iron. Learn from my mistake. You will thank me later.
