'Magic' tip installation technique

I did tips the exact same way for over 10 years, never had one fall off and they all played very well. EXCEPT I used the Locktite 454 during that period, and I use triangles. Nothing wrong with this, and actually I STILL do the Thumb b/h the ear/nose to get some skin oil and rub it on the sides of the tip to burnish....works like a charm!
Now I have equipment for all that, but very fond memories lol. I've also used an Iron but thats some Voodoo and don't know if you landlubbers are ready for black magic just yet!
There is _some _ truth to what he says. Heat often ruins otherwise good tips. The tricks are 1) to use a tip as close to the size of the ferrule as possible. (turning a 14mm tip down to 12mm is often a bad idea) 2) to use very sharp tools when cutting the tips down. Sharp tooling generates much less heat. 3) take your time turning them down. Take a little off at a time so as to not build up any more heat than necessary.
I also believe that there's no better glue for tips than Loctite 454 in most cases. Occasionally with cheap, soft ferrule material contact cement works better but it takes overnight to dry properly.
Dead on about that 454, I had happened upon it when I was freaking 12 lmfao. I would always play at my uncles who happened to be a helicopter mechanic. I got a place to put on a tip in lafayette and it fell off twice! I went to my uncle and he gave me a tube of it. They used it at his job, and stuff is, was and will always be them TRIPPLE NUTZ when it comes to keeping a tip on.
Only thing better is CONAP epoxy but it takes 24hrs to fully cure. They use it in golf clubs/granite counter tops etc. Very Very strong stuff. Comes in black/tan/clear i believe.
