There's something called Windows Movie Maker. Is that suitable?

Movie Maker is a pretty decent application for basic editing. Poke around a bit more to see if Dell gave you anything else. Otherwise, we'll work as if you're using that.

As for the Firewire comment above, if I remember correctly, your computer does not have Firewire support - so the issue is moot. But there is no need to contemplate an upgrade since you are not working with streaming data, rather simple file transfers, and USB 2.0 is more than adequate for this. As a point of reference, it might take 10-20 seconds to transfer a 10 minute movie from your camera to your computer. You might save a second or two with Firewire 800. [If you had a DV camera, and transferred data that way, Firewire would be a good alternative].

All right, now that we've got you technogeeks corralled into one corner of the newsgroup, I have similar questions. These may already have been answered, but some of you assume I know things I don't, so I may not have understood.

So, like Johnny, I'd like to make several-minute (say 2 to 10 minute) clips to post to youtube or put in a powerpoint presentation or put on a web site.

I have a cannon powershot sd800 camera that it appears can do

640 X 480 (30 or 15) fps
320 X 240 (30 or 15) fps
160 X 120 15 fps

The last one is called compact, and it says clips are limited to 3 minutes.

These generate .mov files

I have an older Mac loke Johhnies but also a Dell Latitude D810 running windows XP.

What is my best sequence of steps? Do I need anything else?

I believe 320 X 240 at 15 fps would work wonders for you if the end goal is YouTube or GoogleVideo. In fact you can pretty much shoot the video, connect the camera to the computer and upload the file directly without any processing. YouTube has a flash video encoder which will encode your video (under 100mb) after the upload, it will take care of things for you automatically.

You can also use software to add a title or do some editing, for now just use 320 X 240 at 15 fps when you export the finished edit.

Wei: The LP setting on the Casio is also 15 fps.

As Wei mentioned, youtube will take .mov files directly -> up to 100MB and 10 minutes. This will make life easier with the ATT folks.
