For those who haven't read it and are relatively new to gambling at pool or on other things in a pool hall, you should read Ned Polsky's Hustler's Beats, & Others.

It details the mindset and motivations of the modern hustler. It details also, some of the possible pitfalls to be encountered when betting on a player, on yourself, or when backing another player.

It does make the distinction between a money player and a hustler, just so everyone is aware. The term "hustler" is used to refer to a player that intentionally masks his true playing speed.

As Fast Eddie said, the greats, to a man, were students of human moves. Ned Polsky is one smart dude, and has opened the curtain on a side of the game that a lot of players sense is there, but weren't quite sure how it worked.

It's definitely high brow writing, though.. It's written from a sociologist's perspective, so put on your thinking cap before you order a copy..
