I am going to check out some 2" x 6" maple planks tomorrow that a local guy has for sale. Apparently they have been sitting for a few years in a garage and have some spalting, where they were harvested from is unknown. My question is how to tell the density, I can check the ring count and grain straightness but how to tell if it's suitable for shafts etc.

thanks

Vancouver, I'm guessing that they will be a soft maple and the spalting further strengthens
my suspicions. Sugar maple can spalt but not anywhere as easily as big leaf maple.

I found out it was cut locally so I am pretty certain it is big leaf and would be soft.
