Having internal glued faces that form an x doesn't make it "x shaped". X shaped things are weaker in the x direction than in the + direction only when the spaces between the ribs are empty (they fail because the ribs can fold). In a shaft, it's the spaces between the ribs (the wood) that provide the strength, not the ribs themselves (the glue).
