A fabric marker/chalk. You can get it at any craft store. Sharpens just like a pencil, water soluble so cleans off easy enough.

If you want a line that can be removed, use a dressmaker/tailor pencil. I like the mechanical chalk pencil from Dritz:

The regular-style pencil generally ends up with a wider line.
Works great if you can get the chalk pieces loaded and feed out of the pencil correctly and if you can keep super thin chalk pieces from breaking on you if you feed out too much at once or if you apply too much pressure when using it.

Yes, if you are after a wider, more permanent line the more standard chalk pencil is better. A light touch is required and it will be a fairly light line.

If you have extra dough lying around, a projector is nice. Not only can you project a full grid on the table any time you want with no clean up, you can effortlessly play placement pool the way Earl hopes pool will be played in the future. Just project a given pattern and spot the balls.
But ye, for just marking it old school, you won't find a better option than the one Bob suggested.
