All,

It is official...I will be moving to Maryland in a couple of months. What are my options for pool leagues in the greater Baltimore and greater D.C. areas? I am not sure where I will be living, but maybe this league information will help me make a decision. I know the APA is very strong in Maryland. What else is out there?

Wow, so nobody lives in the D.C. or Baltimore metro area? Or is it that the APA is the only league in town, period? Maybe today is just a slow AZB day...

The APA is the largest in Maryland then the entire nation. There are some BCA in house leagues scattered around MD Baltimore County as well and some TAP leagues which I do not recommend.

All of these have their problems of course, but I would recommend the APA since it's so big in MD. We have a great in houe 9ball and 8ball divison on thurs and Tues at a place called cheers. 9foot Gold Crown threes with Sim 860 cloth. Nice place too. Fire me an email when you get moved and we can meet up and hit a few.

Maryland APA

I live in Frederick, Maryland and play at All-Star Billiards on a Sunday night (5:30pm start) and a Wedesday (7:00 pm start) APA 9 Ball League. We play on 4 1/2 by 9 Brunwick Gold Crowns with Simonis 860 cloth. There are 8 Ball or 9 Ball APA Leagues every night at All-Star's exept for Saturdays. On Saturday's they run an all day 8 Ball Tournament that is roughly based on APA handicaps.

Baltimore APA plays mostly on Bar Boxes and I'm not sure about the DC area.

Hope this helps

If you need more info PM me and I'll give you my email and/or cell phone number.

Good luck with your relocation to Maryland

Thanks Wedge and Icon. I will definitely be in touch when I get down there. I will certainly be looking for people with whom to spar. I am looking for an apartment, or condo relatively close to a pool room. I have prior postings with some rooms being suggested, so I will use those suggestions.

I live in Calvert County MD. There are both APA and TAP leagues in the area. In addition there are a number of both in house and travel bar leagues that are not affiliated with any national organization. The advantage of these is that all of the money paid for dues and green fees is put back into the league for the players. All of leagues that play in my area do so on 7 and 8 foot barboxes, as there are no real poolhalls within an hours drive.

As Heath said, the APA is the largest league in Maryland. In fact, Maryland is split up between two of the largest APA areas in the country.

The main Maryland area is

The Greater Washington area also includes a large portion of Maryland.

I live near the dividing point of these areas and I have played in both.

Currently, I play on Wednesday nights at Side Pockets, in Laurel, Md., where there is an in house 8 ball league and an APA Masters league. Both are played on 9' Gold Crowns.
On other nights, Side Pockets hosts additional APA leagues, as well as TAP and BCA leagues, all in house.
If you prefer travel leagues, there are plenty around, but most of them play on bar boxes.

When you decide where you will be living, let us all know and I'm sure one of us can point you to a good place to play.

i am smack in the middle of Baltimore and DC, but am not a league player. there are many rooms that have leagues, Side Pockets in Laurel, Big Daddy's in Glen Burnie - it all depends on where you are planning to live. if you are looking for a reasonable rental rate, don't live in Howard County, other than that, that is all i can share as i am a newbie of a year myself. look forward to seeing you on the Tiger Tour (www.planet-pool.com).

if you need any help in this area, feel free to hit me up.

I shoot at Cheers on another team then icon. APA is a great choice for a pool league if you like to have fun. Some take it more serious but the league is geared toward Lower Skill Level Players so they feel more competitive. BCA is more for the Advanced Shooter. Forgot in this conversation is Monday Night Mens League that is in The Essex - Middle River area. This league is definitely for the more experienced shooter because there are no handicaps and it is honest try so no safeties. There is a cash payout at the end of the session that can be a nice little chunk if your team can get first place. The loser of every match has to buy a drink for the winner. TAP League is kinda in between APA and BCA. And no where as big as either. One of my daughters lived in Pittsburgh for years but has since moved to Atlanta GA. I've made that haul up 70 to the PA Turnpike more times then I can remember. GOOD LUCK with the move.
