Hello,
I'm seeking information ideas on how to warm up before a match? I've already checked the table, mentally prepared myself etc. now I need to hit balls. How best to do this?

One warm-up routine would be be 5-10 minutes (I have a short preparation window) before a match

Another warm-up routine would be 45 minutes to an hour (I first arrived at tournament site) before a match.

Thank you

You have to tailor your warm-up to your personal needs. What's going to get you in the groove? You have very little time to find your game so you have to know what gets you going and what holds you back.

For example: Some players start their matches with scattered focus which causes a lot of misses early on. If that's your problem, throw the balls out and shoot every shot with maximum focus and intensity during your warm-up.

Some players start out tight and loosen up only after a few games. If that defines you, then warm up playing intentionally fast and loose. It's much easier to tighten things up than to loosen things up during competition.

Thank you that makes a lot of sense. Playing rhythm and focus are two things i struggle with when things aren't going well

I always start with straight in shots about 5ft apart. I'll hit maybe 20 or so. First I'm checking how I'm. Delivering the cue just making sure I can stop the cue ball dead with no side spin. Once I'm happy with this I check my ability to control draw and follow. Again, straight in and trying to land the cue ball on a designated spot. Once I'm happy with this I am pretty much ready to play. Usually takes about 5 mins or less.

If I've got an hour to spend practising I don't use the entire hour. It does bad things to me. I get bored, lose concentration and don't get the most out of the table time. After my straight shots I will scatter 3 balls. Make 3 balls, then scatter 5 balls. Make 5 balls then scatter 10 balls. Make 10 balls then go sit down. After this I'm pretty much warmed up. If I've got 30 mins left until a game I won't pick up my cue until right before the game starts. Few minutes before game time and I will just roll a couple of balls out on the table and pot one, throw another ball out randomly and try get position on it. It helps me practice when I get out of position and have to really let loose to get onto the next ball.

It took me a long time to discover what works for my needs. I can't practise too long. You have to try and see what helps you the most. Most pros can get away with just running a few racks, most amateurs need more structure to their practise. Do something that keeps you entertained but at the same time allows you to see how you are shooting. As soon as you feel it's getting boring stop. Take a rest and go back when you're ready.

accustatsfan...I would do Mother Drills #1 & 2 to warm up and groove in your stroke timing. Then MD 5 to find the speed of the table. Once you do that, you be ready to play...assuming that your stroke is straight and you know how to aim. All of this can be accomplished in 10 minutes.
