MAX 1618 epoxy questions

Ive used the 1618 for several months now, it bonds and seals. It is some great epoxy. I havent bought west system again. I also have there industrial epoxy and 5 minute. It does dry very slow but when cured its very hard. The bonding is as good.or better than west imo. You wont be disappointed.
 
Thanks for the feedback Tony...I know someone else here mentioned it awhile back and I wanted to try it. I just finished my west 207 and almost out of the 205, so now's a good time to switch and not spend $$$ to resupply. Just wished the dry time was quicker. How soon can you re-apply a second coat when using it as a sealer? Is sanding needed between coats? I noticed that they mentioned using acetone to thin it when using it to seal wood, and it sounds like it sped things up....have you tried that?
I use epoxy in my booth which is usually heated to about 80-85 degrees which may speed things a bit.

Yes I have thinned it with acetone and it will set a little faster and it penetrates a little more. Having it warm is also a plus, ive glued up with colder temperatures and it slows the set time. Once you try it you will see what I mean. I think Kim Walker uses it too. I light sand if I do two coats. With epoxy the slower it sets the harder it becomes/bonds to the material, generally. It is really good epoxy.

I called them up and talked with the tech guy.... I was wondering about some of the other epoxies they have as some of them were said to be harder or high performance.

I was told that the 1618 is the latest stuff and that is what I should use for sealer on pool cues. I think it is rated a little bit harder than West System.

I mix it on a scale in a 2 to 1 ratio resin to hardener. I put on 9 gms total for each sealer coat. I put on 3 coats about 4 hours apart at 72 deg. Cooler temps take longer. I smooth it with a playing card or a foam brush or a rubber glove.... all work well. That gives me about 12 thou build. I sand it with 220 before clear coat.

I hang the cue in a warm area for 3 days before sanding. I was told that full cure takes 48 to 72 hours depending on temp.

It will also polish to a nice shine it you use it for the top coat.....

I haven't used this stuff but I have used Fiberlay's "ProGlas 1300", which has very similar pot life and curing schedules. I don't think 36 - 72 hours to reach full strength is terribly long, and the specific operations I use this class of epoxy for don't require any sort of quick turn around for me anyway.

I think I'll buy a batch and experiment with it.
