McDermott cues in The Color Of Money

Back in the late 1980's I bought a Meucci cue with two shafts it played rather well just not better than my McDermott but then I was kind of picky something about how the McDermott hit a ball I really liked .
It's a good cue don't get me wrong Joss cues are also !

Thanks for the great thread. I bought a "Grady Seasons" cue new back in the early 90s and didn't even know it. Grey stain and all. Also just picked up my son's first cue a D1 from being refinished at McDermott on Friday. I asked him to pass it on to his kids, as it's a 56" cue. Not cheap but so glad I did it. McD does really nice work.

Nice! Did it come with the steel joint or did you change it?

I live a few minutes away from McDermott. Next time I'm in there I'll ask Jamie what and how they got involved with that. I'm sure he's got the backstory.

I ended up talking to Jayme through email - this was his response.

“That was all before my time, so I don’t have first-hand experience with it. All I know is McDermott was not featured in the credits, which I’m told was a major disappointment with Jim.”

The mystery remains…

Good timing! I swung in there today and got told the same thing.

Now I just have more questions than answers haha.

I had it changed a couple years after I bought it. As stated previously McD service is top notch.

In regards to others mentioning a preference to the C and D series, it made me wonder how age may play into it. I'm 55+ and agree those series look more appealing than a lot of their new designs. Hand the current catalog to my 20+ son, however, and he loves the new designs. Doesn't appreciate the traditional points like ol' dad does. So I believe they're doing well catering to the youngsters based on my very limited sample size.

I was also disappointed in the 50th anniversary cues. Throwback tributes are nice but I was expecting something better.

I mist admit I totally agree with Tom on what a let down the 50th anniversary cues are I expected something at least kind of similar to the old C & D lines of cues in some ways I feel cheated somehow because those two lines of cues were very popular back in the day !

So I'll just save my pennies until I can get my old C 18 refurbished with 3 new shafts and not look back !

I've got a different take on the 50th Anniversary series. I'll never own a C-20 and found the 50th Anniversary homage pretty interesting, so after a couple weeks of back and forth, finally ordered one just to get one in hand and it showed up today. The fit and finish on this cue is simply outstanding and perfect. Never had a cloth wrap before - love it! Sorry for the color variations - harsh lighting in the basement and no natural light this time of day - here are a few pics, plus McDermott's comparison to the inspiration. Played out several racks with it and it is one solid cue and I'm really enjoying the feel of it - interesting contrast to a couple of low deflection cues, including a CF - it's fun!

It is very nice looking! I bet it will get a lot of compliments at the pool hall

No pool hall in these parts, just buy a cue for my own enjoyment only, but the dogs were very interested in something "new" that appeared yesterday! Mostly just me in the basement with my many fans, lol.

I still like my C-14.

That’s an interesting take 🤔 it’s possible. Although technically Moselle beat Eddie in their first matchup, Grady beat Vince in their first match, and Amos beat Eddie as well. Moselle was the top guy at Chalkies, and Grady was the number one player in the world using a McDermott.

There’s also quite a few other McDermotts in the movie used by extras, but I can’t get a full view of the butt to identify exactly what D models they were. I wonder if the reason they never advertised it was because none of the McDermotts were used by main characters. The only cue that was highlighted was the “Balabushka”.
My theory was tongue-in-cheek. I'm sure McDermott would have loved the publicity and profited from it. It's a shame they weren't listed in the credits.

It is a shame. Despite not being in the credits, I wish McDermott were more vocal about their cues being used in the movie after it was released. Would’ve been great for sales. I bet Keiths D-17 would be very popular.

Just wanted to share my Amos cue that arrived this weekend. I purchased it back in January and had it sent to McDermott for a full refinish and stained Dark American Cherry. I also added a black nylon wrap and a matching G core shaft to go with it too. It looks and plays great!

That looks great. Since posting in this thread I picked up a D-1. It doesn’t look as nice as your refinished one, but looks good and is in excellent condition. Nylon wrap is in great shape. It hits great. All I’m doing to it now is a new tip. I don’t know I’d ever have it refinished, but if I do it would probably go back to McDermott like yours did. If I get a second shaft it will be a plain old maple one.

It was somewhere in between just shooting pool and the gear focus of today IMO. My experience…Shafts were maple. Then people would sand the crap out of them with Scotchbrite or sandpaper. The pool hall where I bought my first cue you could get a Le Pro or a Le Pro for a tip replacement. That is only a slight exaggeration. Chalk was Master. Meucci had a following. Where I played they’d make fun of the plastic joint. I had one for a while anyway, but there was a big preference for a metal joint where I played a lot. Adam was a popular brand. Heard about mystical custom brands, but saw few. Saw Joss Wests in Denver, Stroud was in Colorado then. One guy from NY had a Balabushka. Well used. Not babied at all. Saw the occasional Viking, Schon, Palmer. Mc Dermott was popular. More so at places without the strong metal joint bias where I played. No break cues. No jump cues. 1x1 or 1x2 cases mostly. The one accessory from then that has disappeared now is the apron. GC skirts would put a black line on your pants.

My recollections from my era in the mid to late ‘80’s.
Everything you said in this post brought back memories for me. I had a lot of different cues but was fond of Meucci's in the late 80's and 90's. I was already interested in pool before the Color of Money came out but it really ignited it to another degree.

No telling how many shafts I sanded. I got a Joss and was in love with it, I think I really wanted the stainless joint at the time because I thought players better than me were using those. I wanted a Schon because I seemed to regularly take beatings from guys playing with Schon cues. I did have a "break cue" but it was whatever cue I liked the least. First cue was a Huebler sneaky, then an Adam. My cases were Porper and It's George and all my tips were Le Pro.

Nice! McDermott does an excellent job and go above and beyond. They refinished and turned down the original shaft (used to be 13.5mm) to my g-core specs at no extra charge. I also requested to leave off the G-core logo on the shaft and they initially said no, but to my surprise ended up doing it for me anyway. Great experience.
