This may have been asked before but here goes:What is the general opinion of Mcdermotts upper end cues?I was at a tournament in Memphis Friday night and noticed a highly respected $player using one and it just reminded me of reading somewhere that Jim Mcdermott was a friend to Jerry Franklin early in his career and i just wondered if their upper end cues played well or generally were regarded on a par with most good production cues?I realize its the archer,not the arrow and any cue wont make me an A player,this is just a curiosity thing.Thanks,M.S.

I have a low end McDermott so I can't say for sure but I would think that the high end McDermotts get more attention when it comes to wood selection, inlays and finish. Playability is probably close to the same as a $300 McD. The same can be said for most any cue brand including the custom makers (within "their own cue line" I mean). McDermott is as good as any production cue and probably better than most.

I've owned two McD's, one that I had for many years (well, still have, but don't use anymore) and another I had for about six months that I liked, until I had the opportunity to get a Schon LTD for a nice price, and I haven't looked back. Older one was $350 retail back around '90, newer $575 when I got it mid 2004 (and I think it was an '03 or '04 model).

I have a McDermott. I think it's a "Cutlass". It retails right around $300. It hits kind of hard. But I put a new shaft on it. A "Smart" shaft and it plays awesome.
They are decent cues in my opinion. Not as nice as a Shon but good for the price.

However, I’m not really into cues. I played with a Joss West for a long time and then migrated to production cues. I have had a few Mc Dermott cues over the years and they all play pretty much the same to me. I don’t know if extra money buys more than more inlays. I had this fitted with a predator 314 and an I shaft. I won the cue in a raffle and it is the only cue I have won that I ended up playing with. It plays really well from my perspective but I’m not sure if it would play any better than a lower end McDermott.

I don't have an "upper end" McDermott, but mine was around $500 (Torch model). I don't think it plays any different than the base model McD's, of which I've had several in the past. I like McDermott's because you can still get a model that has a wood to wood joint, which I prefer. I use Predator shafts with mine and it plays quite well.
