McDermott Defy 12 Radial?

Pool Dawg had a lightly used Defy radial for sale. Looked like a good price to try out the shaft. When I opened the package the first thing I saw was a brass insert. I’m thinking, WTF I’ve never seen a brass insert for a radial shaft. The threads look pretty big but it doesn’t fit either radial cue I have. It also doesn’t fit my 3/8-10. It’s too big for 5/16-14. What the heck size can it be? By the time it arrived Pool Dawg was closed. I sent them an email for a return authorization.

In the last few mos. i've heard at 4-5 people who got the wrong item from PD. sounds like they need a new shipping clerk.
 
Question answered. I didn’t pull out all the packaging, now that I have I saw
the small McDermott sticker that says QR.

3/8-10 and Radial have the grey insert. That’s why I was shocked when the first thing I saw when I opened my package was a brass insert. Oh well, back to looking for a used Radial Defy.

I just got a defy shaft with the soft insert for a 3/8 10. Tried it on 2 3/8 10 butts, one an older Mcdermott. I can't get it started threading without thinking I'm screwing up the nylon.
Let Seyberts know, surprised they don't have a stock answer for this problem. After doing some searches, doesn't look like I'm the first having this problem.

Always screw backwards first to seat the thread.

Yep got it on. When I went to take it back off it was tough. Put some nitrile gloves on. Actually pull the pin out of the butt instead of the shaft. Admittedly, that pin must have not been on very well but it's been there for 15 years with lots of use with wood shafts. This is an interesting experience.
Bet Mcdermott switches to phenolic joints at some point. If leaving them this tight is because of the soft material used for the insert they really need to rethink their approach.

Ouch. I have seen that happen before.
I agree they are pretty tight and should re-think it a bit.
The 3/8x10 in general has a lot of variations. I had my own taps made. Expensive but for my job. Effective.
