I've been looking at these new McDermott's series that come standard with the I2 shaft and would like to get some feedback from the board.

Another thing I'd like some info on, they use "recon ebony". From what I read here on AZ, McDermott states that it is a man made material. I wonder if it's something cheap like fiberglass. Anyhow I'd like to get some opinions on feel, balance and anything else you guys can share to help me decide. Thanks.

I currently shoot with a Mike Cochran cue with an ivory ferrule. I had bought a 314-2 in the past but never really gave it enough play time. I delegated the 314-2 as a break shaft on a Adam butt and promptly broke it in half after smacking it on the table lol. Looking back, I realize I was not emotionally ready to let go of my MC as my main player. Of late I've been feeling an urge again to try an LD cue (shaft) and I think I am more receptive to maybe tucking the MC away for a little while.
 
If you do a search on "McDermott I-shaft", you'll get a lot of opinions and input. I shoot with a McDermott I-3 because I like the 11.75mm tip. Gives me a sense of geometric precision where I hit the cue ball. I bought mine used here on the Forum. McDermott honors the warranty and I've had excellent service from them. They'll clean the shaft, reseal it, and put a new Moori tip on it for free. They'll do this twice a year for life. They also warranty against any warping. The only charge is $21 for shipping and handling. I've played with an OB-2 but the ferrule was distracting to me. I did not notice any differences in playability between the OB-2 and the I-3. I liked both. I just recently bought a used I-1 here on the Forum and used it for breaking. First break with it and I noticed immediately how solid the hit was and how powerful it felt. Out of 10 breaks (playing 8 ball), I sunk either 1 or 2 balls 8 times.
If you do some searches on the Predator shafts, you'll read about splinters, warping, etc. You won't read that in any of the I-series shaft. McDermott builds a great shaft in my opinion. Hopefully, you'll find someone in your area with a I-series shaft and perhaps they'll let you play with it for a while. I think you'll like it. But again, tips and shafts are pretty subjective. It's what you like that's important. Good luck in your quest.
 
Thank you foe your info. Now i've read that the I series shafts are light around 3 to 3.5 oz. Can you say this is accurate? If it is I may have to go with a much lighter butt to maintain a neutral balance.
 
I'm interested in this topic as well. I have been going back and forth between the Ikon and the G-i2 series. The McDermott cues look better imo
 
the i shafts are definitely lighter...3-3.5oz is about right, varies a bit based on the wood and if it has an insert or not.
 
Unless you get the i1.
My i1 weighs 3.7 oz and is a 3/8x10 insert
I got it about 4 months ago.
 
I have broken many racks with my I3. McD has one of the best warranties in the business and we should't be afraid to use it. Tip maintenance is really the issue here.
